How about a new "Celebrity Groupies" group on DU?
Edited on Thu Nov-23-06 12:11 AM by ConsAreLiars
i think it would be a pretty active group for the 5% or whatever who are so happy to chase after the latest bit of chum tossed into the water by the Corporate Media.

I mean, there is so much to deal with, and so many who get so excited about the latest bit of "OMG! Look at what Celebrity X did!" drivel getting tossed to the fishies.

The new group would have everything. Moral outrage! The ecstatic feeling of being able to assault or exalt cartoon characters! A sense of somehow being involved in the lives of the rich and famous! And, a chance to join together to satisfy whatever it is that getting satisfied by these "celebrity" threads! Not to mention, all the Celebrities! Mel Gibson, Madonna, Michael Richards, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, and oh, so many more! They'd all be there, in the imaginations of the participants, at least. On slow news days, there will always be The Star or Entertainment Tonight! for backup fodder.

So, what does it take to make a new group? 10 people saying they want it? 100? 1000? Should be easy, don't you think?

(edit out stray keypunch)

1. Like It Or Not
...the Whacky World of Celebrity Silliness offers a genuine glimpse into the concerns, moods, fears, & desires of a great many people & of the culture as a whole. It requires many large grains of salt & much reading between the lines, but its triviality does not trump its usefulness.

6. Red Herrings seem to be very effective.
Not a real suggestion, of course, since few want to admit that they are being played, but every so often even DUers (some) get side-tracked by the TeeVee into celebrity gossip and miss/ignore the harder stuff. Maybe mods should kick the trash into the Lounge, but more likely I just need to expect to see these as variants of the dead deer sex dicussions. Many threads, many posts, signifying nothing.

Not one reply. Threads (including mine) on Kramer, etc, get a lot of replies.

It happens, people like to talk about the things other people are talking about I suppose (water cooler kind of thing).

5. Yup, playing games of trivia to shut out reality.
Circuses presented by corporate media intended to keep the lemmings blind. And what lemming wants to see too much.
