1. They are all so good, it's almost impossible to choose...
In the end, I had to choose "Tree Dwellers" because it looks like home, and I miss home quite dreadfully at this time of year. Home is Tampa, Florida, BTW. I was born here in NC, and I live in NC and I love it, but Tampa is where I grew up, and it will always be home.

5. Every one of these is worthy of being the winner
and each of the photographers should be proud. It was damn hard to choose one to vote for in this round without regretting not being able to give a vote to each one.

Thanks to the photographers for reminding us today that we should be thankful for this beautiful planet. If the human race spent more time honoring the wonders of life, as these good people have, and less time actually screwing up the earth, we might find that heaven is right here and now, and not some mythical Oz above the clouds.

Happy Thanksgiving, Photography Group. Blessed be you all.

9. Sunset Celebration packs an emotional punch. Everything, setting,
lighting, composition, color are perfect in my opinion. It is one of those images I wish I would have created.
In my opinion it is heads and shoulders above the rest. It is timeless. The others are very good, but Sunset Celebration hit me like a kick to the head.

11. Very tough call.
But I finally chose El Gaitero Cubano. Normally I don't care for photos with human subjects in them, but this one is fascinating.

Remarkable photos. The photographers deserve much praise, each and every one of them.

18. What did your dad pick as #1? Just curious
Edited on Thu Nov-23-06 01:43 PM by F.Gordon
My #1 probably won't make the final three, which is too bad. Compostion, excellent representation of the whole "rule of thirds" thing. Tone. Color balance. The eye is immediately drawn to one focal point and then takes in everything round' it... something very hard to do with any photo. Plus, it's a "pure" silhouette. Has that whole theme thing going for it.

I'm more of a fox lover, but they like cats.

20. His pick may not make the top 9!
He liked the "hikers" first, "Olympic Beach Sunset" 2nd & "Early Bird" 3rd. He gave honorable mention to "El Gaitero Cubano". I liked the Olympic Beach Sunset myself. We both agreed that the cat was a little too dominant in the first picture. Just opinions...

21. "Hikers" is an excellent photo
It really tells a story. Doesn't need a title to let the viewer know what they are looking at. And I love the slope of the "horizon" and the balance of the two hikers against the one. It may not have been planned that way.. but it really works. IMHO.

It's all just opinions. I was just curious what pop..... thought. Thanks

45. While the exposure one might get on GD is nice....
It now becomes a popularity contest, and 9 times out of 10, a photo with children or animals will probably win. Technical merit gets thrown out the window.

IMO.

just the nature of how our voting works.

And you would be surprised how often children or animals don't win as well. We love our landscapes!

34. While all of the finalists are spectacular ...
... as they always are, it's Sundown Celebration that touches me the most.

It looks more like a painting than a photograph, in that everything is so perfectly captured, it seems more the rendering of an artist who could choose how to play with light, shadow and colour rather than be fortunate enough to snap the shutter at JUST the right moment in time.

It's always difficult to choose JUST ONE of the fine photos in each contest, but this is the one that really embraced me - plus it reminded me of days on the beach growing up on Long Island, where we were always ready to take that one last splash in the surf before heading home for the evening.

39. Not really...
...when the very nature of silhouettes is that they're backlit. In my experience, most backlit images are taken with the rising or setting sun behind them, thus a lot of silhouettes will be sunsets or sunrises (the latter more rarely, since people are more likely to be up at sunset than at sunrise ;-) ) by default.

48. you know, my concept of a silhouette has always been more Victorian based
of the image being projected onto a screen being backlight (so you are looking at the screen from the one side, with the object and the light being on the other side. I think its probably a more traditional definition of the term, and if I'd had time I would have done one to submit. I don't think it would have done very well, though, when I look at all of these gorgeous images.

77. An interesting observation...
When we were holding the contests in the Lounge, we had one dog photo win, but never a cat photo. In fact, photos of cats generally finished quite low, while dogs did much better.

Now that GD is being polled rather than the Lounge Lizards, we have a cat photo winning. Coincidence? Discuss.

80. I am NOT a cat person .....
So I carry no excessive animal bias into this choice ....

(Perhaps the opposite ? .. it IS a great photo, though)

I will instead choose the one that best reflects my choice (and my new excessive bias) to live in one of the most amazing places on earth : The Northwest ....

Olympic Beach Sunset ....

ALL are wonderful .....
