I love this country more than I can say and it distresses me... |
|
on occasion, when I read posts that would seem to indicate that those Americans hate America. It is sort of like a parent with a wayward child - you often hate what they do, but never stop loving the child. I realize that this country has many, many problems, but that just makes me want to work harder for solutions instead of indicting America and taking the side of those that would see us on our knees.WIll someone explain to me that the response to our foibles and gross missteps is a blanket attack on the country instead of trying to figure out a solution. It is also perplexing that those people are willing to overlook or explain the faults, errors and occasional crimes of non Americans and jump right in the middle of the 'ugly' Americans. Maybe (hopefully) it is just that those people expect more from America and hold her to a higher standard.

9. I think the poster is referring to the... |
|
... we're the worst nation that has ever lived. We invented poverty. We invented the class system. We invented slavery and were the last country on earth to end it. We must sell everything we have and pay it back in reparations..... but you go first. That crowd.

4. Good candidate for Prez |
|
He says he does not want to run but if you listen to Trump I think he would be a good president. He went on a rant at the republicans because of what they have done to this country. How they are outsourcing jobs, no health insurance and all the things that made the middle class great. He has the charisma and he has the money and he sounds like a damn good democrat.

6. The opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference. |
|
And, that's pretty much how I feel about this or any other country.
What I "hate" is the people in power who assume the right to decide the fate of people. I don't care if they're Americans, Guatemalans, Chinese, some tribal chief in New Guinea, some congressman, the CEO of some corporation, a general, of the "Boss-in-Chief" of some country.
I find the notion of "my country" absurd. I am neither proud of America nor ashamed of something so nebulous as "my country".

10. I guess I'm a fool then...I suppose I'm not as 'enlightened' as others |

Edited on Thu Nov-23-06 01:51 PM by jhrobbins
but I like believing in the founding precepts of this country - my feeling for America is all entangled up with memories of my family, holidays, trips, etc - so it is much more than mere 'patriotism'.
I do wonder a bit why you find it necessary to call me a fool and absurd merely for stating a love for something.

12. Then why not say that? |
|
I love the precepts put forward by the founders of the country. (All of them? How about slavery? How about the status of women?)
I love my family. I love family holidays? I love taking trips? What does any of those have to do with "country"? You could have been born in Botswana and have had the same experiences.

14. People get conflicted because we are "of" so many communities |
|
We are all a part of the general public. We all are part of our families we belong to We are part of the friendship/workplace
We are a part of all of those things, and all of those can be in conflict with each other....all the time, some of the time..most of the time...
Things that are for the good of the public, might not be in the best interest of YOUR family (a road that you get assessed for because it's nearest YOUR neighborhood, but that the whole populace may use)
Things that you and your friends like to do, may not be in the best interest of the public (dune buggying/offroading in the desert comes to mind)
Things at the workplace may benefit you and not the public or vice versa at times. (they may pollute, but you have a job you need...or they may lay you off in order to remain in business in the community..or what if they put other businesses OUT of business..
What I'm saying is that nothing is perfect and everyone has conflicts with just living.. Accomodation and middle ground should be the goal..and even achieving that, "someone" will be "out"..

Just came from the theatre and I gotta say, if you have some time this weekend, go see it. Just hearing the speeches in the movie make it all the worth while.....and I might add, it just emphasizes how far down we have let ourselves slide with this crappy administration and the shit they have been allowed to get by with.
Priceless part of the movie - Bobby is interviewing someone (sorry, after 55 years of age, the memory isn't reliable! LOL!!) and asks why they are arresting them.....they reply that the perpertrators were 'thinking' about breaking the law - - Bobby laughs and tells them to go read the Constitution.
Good movie....and it wasn't quite what I expected, but it was good nonetheless. It was worth the price of a ticket for sure, even tho I bawled like a baby while leaving.
Makes you think and wonder just how different things would have been had not Ronnie Raygun and the Bush circus acts had not been allowed to continue on the present path of destruction, chaos, hatred and unmitigated greed.

Who says we don't?
Love means total acceptance of all faults? I don't agree.
No one hates America. That's just crap thrown at someone when they can't deal with the concept of their country being criticized.
It's just immature.

20. Some people love the country like a 3 yr old loves his mommy. |
|
Mommy is perfect. Mommy can't do anything wrong. If you say anything bad about Mommy it's because you're a BAD BAD person.
This is not how adults and thoughtful people love their country.
