Forget the Homeless on Thanksgiving!
Everybody wants to help the homeless on Thanksgiving
and at Christman time.

Squelch the impulse until January and February and March
when they're going to need it.

1. why not do both?
Giving at the end of the year is fine for tax write-offs. :sarcasm:

But you can still help people at other times of the year. Homeless people don't become invisible the rest of the year.

4. In 2000 I visited DC...
...and was shocked to see homeless people sleeping on benches within sight of the White House. Shameful, indeed.

9. In many communities, there are almost too many opportunities for
food and services during the holidays.

Consider volunteering once a week year round. The advantage is that you get to know many of the homeless and under-employed as individuals, not as an anonymous mass.

10. My city of La Crosse has a Thank giving community dinner for everybody.
It is a big all day event at our civic center with food and entertainment and is a community event. They will even deliver a meal to those who cannot come down. Starting tomorrow through New Year's Eve the Rotary club puts on a million light Christmas display at our Riverside park which collects food and raises money for local food pantries. Yes, it happens at the end of the year, but it does open the eyes to some that there are hungry all year round and raises awareness of hunger. There are other concerts and events throughout the year where admission is bringing food to donate. Yes, it is important to help feed the hungry all year, but these year end events do sow the seeds that help all year long.

12. My Newcomer's Club adopted a "single Mom" family every year
We paid for school supplies, clothes for the kids, a box of food staples every month, activity tickets for the school kids, yearbook fees, class rings, winter coats, took the kids shopping for Mother'sDay & Mom's birthday.
One of our members (auto repair place owner) took care of her car.
and of course at Xmas time we got them a tree & some loot for the kiddies

One Mom ended up working at the business of one of the husbands operated.

Care is a year-round endeavor..
