Let's Grow Some Balls, Skip The Media Whores & Pink Tutu Dems And Bitchslap This War Off The Planet
Anybody watching the news today, with footage of the outrageous carnage in Sadr City and Bahgdad, on Thanksgiving, has got to put 2 and 2 together and ask themselves,

"What can WE do to stop this goddamned illegal, immoral war in Iraq (and prevent the next one in the pipeline)."

Not as in "What can WE do....?"

But "What can WE DO...?" :wtf:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=364x2792215

On Thanksgiving, as we list things we're thankful for, let's consider simple things like: Electricity, Water, Food, Travel, Normal Daily Life. Simple things missing from the lives of people that George Bush went to war to "liberate."

Images of the political and military chaos, in a country turned into a warzone by the Bushco. invasion and left devastated 3 years after Halliburton KBR, etc. arrived to rebuild what the U.S. bombs destroyed.......... What can WE DO to stop this insanity?

We can organize ourselves to send a message, starting from where we are and working outward, using community networks and net resources, bypassing MegaMedia and a stagnant (if potentially revitalized) Congress. We can flex our purchasing power and grassroots voice by participating in November 24 Buy Nothing Day. Be grateful for what we have and and recognize our power to choose what companies we support (or not) with our $$$$$. Think that won't get the corporations and lobbyists attention?

The bloodiest day in Iraq, on our day of traditional thanksgiving. Let's honor the lives lost and damaged in our name, by pressuring the Congress to end this war sooner rather than later.

Call, email, fax General Electric corporation ( Defense contractor and Republican contributor ) and tell them we will not buy anything from your company until you get your CEO to get the Republican party to get the war to end.

Buy nothing day? Does nothing significant.

Buy nothing from GE until the war ends.

Buy no GE lightbulbs, no GE stoves, refrigerators, TVs, stereo equipment, etc.

8. Unify Your Voices, Flex Your Purchase Power, Send A Message, Boycott The Worst Altogether Now
http://adbusters.org/metas/eco/bnd/

Every November, for 24 hours, we remember that no one was born to shop. If you’ve never taken part in Buy Nothing Day, or if you’ve taken part in the past but haven’t really committed to doing it again, consider this: 2006 will go down as the year in which mainstream dialogue about global warming finally reached its critical mass. What better way to bring the Year of Global Warming to a close than to point in the direction of real alternatives to the unbridled consumption that has created this quagmire?

when it is "not the only way you have to do it." This time it is not done to be unkind or uncaring. It is a spoof and an invitation for all the macho trash talkers to show us what they're really made of, stand up, do something and/or put their money where their (foul) mouth is.

I am sorry you are upset but the truth is the title is CLEARLY too ridiculous to be taken seriously.

49. Because
Because: “Let's Grow Some Balls, Skip The Media Whores & Pink Tutu Dems And Bitchslap This War Off The Planet” is so ridiculous and absurd it is obvious there’s a subtext there

Because: “Anybody watching the news today, with footage of the outrageous carnage in Sadr City and Bahgdad, on Thanksgiving, has got to put 2 and 2 together and ask themselves, "What can WE do to stop this goddamned illegal, immoral war in Iraq (and prevent the next one in the pipeline)." “

Because: the trashtalkers and macho poseurs never seem to actually do anything

Because: GD returned from the table to bs and ignore the war.

Because: there was another “bitchslap” thread bouncing around, with the some giggling about “Uh oh, PC’ll get ya!” like they did right away on this OP.

Because: trashtalk is impotent and prevalent and that is not going to change here.

Because: I wanted to invite the trashtalkers to look at themselves, at their lives, at their power and voice in combination with others and consider doing something.

Because: the carnage in Iraq and our (unwilling) connection with it is happening right now, in our name..........

Because: I have been an unwilling, default champion of women’s rights and respect on DU, because the bullshit language is offensive and divisive and distracting and unavoidable.

Because: anyone who sees my name attached knows that has got to be a put-on.

Because: the person who complained knows me.

Because: at least one person “got it.”

I am answering you here and kicking, rather than let it fall (which I would do with respect for those offended) except it is on Greatest and will most likely pop up again.

45. ”You think it is too ridiculous. Others think it is a slap.....Lots of people trash talk. We don't expect it around here, though.”

It is a ridiculous over-the-top slap at anyone who thinks that sort of posturing actually affects anything..... As I told the one complaining,

“The absurdity of the cheese is intentional. I can only apologize for it not being absurd *enough* “

Not “absurd enough” because, although you “don’t expect it around here” we see it all the time. The glorification and ascendancy of “bitchslap” in recent weeks is one reason the OP title was provoked. I agree with your and the other’s outrage. It is outrageous, it is impotent posing, it is offensive and distracting and it is everywhere (which bolsters everyone’s bravado in thinking its “normal.” FUCK YEAH!!)

So okay I says to meself, okay let’s sees what dey gots, right? Do macho epithets add up to effective directed action or sceered, impotent whining?

That’s why.

56. You're right. I wouldn't count on that alone. Woulda thought that packing all the
familiar chuckleheaded, macho taunts into one OP would have been enough to make the absurdity obvious.

Too hard to see it, I guess, now that the world is so absurd......................................

I wouldn't float it again, knowing now how desenstized we have become by mexed missages. However, if I ever see "bitchslap" again, I might laugh if it was something unbelievably stupid like "bitchslap this war" rather than something believably stupid like "_____ just bitchslapped ______."

"Frankly, I couldn't get past the first or second sentence of your post because I was so bothered by your subject line."

I agree with you when those titles are serious. It's stupid.

btw someone below "loved the title" and then edited to say we need more "love" than "testes." Some consolation in all this that even someone who doesn't get it gets it and is thoughtful enough to correct me.

There are DU'ers who don't -- not the majority, fortunately, but whenever it happens it's disturbing. Language has power.

I think that one reason for my reaction was the immediate reply about the "p.c. police." Which I couldn't read except as a put-down. Did that person understand your joke, too? Because, to me, it felt like he was making fun of women who might be offended.

Anyway, thanks for clarifying. See you later!

53. It will take embarrassing this Bush WH, but it will take calling in ALL our alienated allies...
...and having them help us in Iraq with troops, money, and weapons, and most important of all: A PLAN.

It will also take Congress to grow BALLS and to warn the pResident that Congress with withdraw it's authorization founded upon the War Powers Act (meaning, Congress granted authorization to the president to use military force under their supervision, and only temporarily, and can--and should withdraw their authorization SOON) now Iraq has escalated into a civil war.

Congress is now the ONLY government body that can stop this war within 3-6 months with massive help from "Old Europe", and force Bush to use the barely used "diplomatic road" if they so choose.

The American people have given Congress a clear message 11/7/2006. The American people are sick and tired of this escalated civil war in Iraq that's killing our troops with no end in sight!

Now we'll see what our overpaid Congresspeople will do with it.

Bush doesn't play well with others and that's why he attacked Iraq virtually unilaterally. Kerry's plan was to step back and allow UN peace keepers to step up in a true coalition. Now that Bush has screwed the pooch and Poppy had to bail him out many thousands of waisted lives and much squandered treasure later Kerry's plan is pretty much what we will end up with.

51. Screw the “Screw the PC Crap” crap
Time to put up or shut up. Did anyone see the images last night-- after our nationwide feast of giving thanks-- of what this administration has perpetrated in our (unwilling) name, that is going on last night while people toss around “bitchslap” and act tough; that is going on today and tonight and every night and day until we come out of our comfy national coma and demand accountability?

The election was a start. The new Congress in January will be a start.

But this (not) absurd (enough) OP title was an invitation and a challenge to US, to US here, to US to do something, to SKIP the media that is sanitized and the Democrats who are compromised and DO SOMETHING.

If that macho energy is more than gutless trashtalk, then folks need to get it together and quit waiting for others to lead or act on their behalf.

55. And You Truly Believe That Putting Up Or Shutting Up Consists Of Calling For A Useless Boycott?
Edited on Fri Nov-24-06 01:55 PM by OPERATIONMINDCRIME
Do you truly believe that calling for an ineffective boycott, from your computer no less, hours before stores open without any real attempt at organizing is an honorable attempt at putting up or shutting up? Do you really expect others to respect your call to arms as having any legitimacy?

You seem to want to act so enraged here, as if the images impacted you to such a degree that you are fed up beyond fed up and it is time to take SERIOUS action and take matters into our own hands in some call to arms action that will get everyone in power to notice. Do you really think for a second that some no effort call to boycott from the comfort of your computer is truly putting up or shutting up, or making even the slightest sacrifice on your part whatsoever?

This is nothing more than show and tell in my opinion. It is a hypocritical trumpet blowing declaration that shouts out "wake up everybody! This war is such an atrocity and we need to take it seriously! We need to sacrifice whatever we have to and take this cause seriously enough because people are dying and we need to stop it now! Stop talking about it and do something! But all I'm gonna do is type some declaration to boycott from the comfort of my computer that will carry no impact whatsoever while trying to act like I'm taking this seriously!"

That's all this is. If you were truly serious about the impact of the images and how much they demand a call to arms action, you'd be out in the streets organizing. You'd be out in front of the stores holding signs and protesting. You'd be engaging in public displays of civil disobedience while risking discomfort. You'd be attempting to do something actually real that would take sacrifice, time, energy and real effort. But to come here and 'challenge' DU'ers as being too comfortable and they need to take this more seriously, while not doing anything yourself whatsoever to break your own comfort, is as hypocritical as you can get.

This isn't a call to arms for anything. It isn't some big awakening or epiphany about how you now realize we have to 'put up or shut up' and take matters into our own hands. If it were, you'd be doing more than typing useless calls to boycott that have ZERO impact, and you'd instead be out in the streets getting your hands dirty.

So I apologize for the harshness of my assessment, but I just can't stand false premises and prophets.

To 'put up or shut up' takes more than asking a few DU'ers to just not buy anything today. Maybe someday you'll realize the truth of what I'm saying.

59. It's Hard To Tell If You Misunderstand On Purpose Or Simply Misunderstand
"We can organize ourselves to send a message,
starting from where we are and working outward,
using community networks and net resources,
bypassing MegaMedia
and a stagnant (if potentially revitalized) Congress.
AND
We can flex our purchasing power
and grassroots voice by participating in November 24 Buy Nothing Day.
Be grateful for what we have
and recognize our power to choose what companies we support (or not) with our $$$$$.
Think that won't get the corporations and lobbyists attention?"

Buy Nothing Day is a good reminder of the reality of our purchasing power, which for some reason (comfort, convenience, denial?) the nation doesn't flex as a whole or much in organized numbers.

You had a reply to your previous post that pointed out the relevance of not supporting specific companies that directly profit from war (and report the "news"). Those efforts are more organized.

Asking people to think on this day-- Buy Nothing Day, organized by Adbuster Magazine, link above-- about what they support (or refuse to support) with the money they spend (or don't) is timely, not "last minute."

You are in no position to judge. I do what I do and you have no idea what that is (or isn't). If you ignore the connection between giving your money to certain companies and what the return is on your investment, that's up to you. If more people thought about it, they could make a difference, even on an individual level. If you ignore your own value in affecting change, that's up to you, too.

"You seem to want to act so enraged here, as if the images impacted you to such a degree that you are fed up beyond fed up and it is time to take SERIOUS action and take matters into our own hands in some call to arms action that will get everyone in power to notice."

Some people already think (and act) about these things and have done for years. I am answering you because it might interest or help someone else to have some information (rather than your invective) about this. Otherwise I wouldn't.

"This is nothing more than show and tell in my opinion. It is a hypocritical trumpet blowing declaration that shouts out "wake up everybody! This war is such an atrocity and we need to take it seriously!"

Your insults, misrepresentations and demands are typical. It is YOU who "...seem to want to act so enraged here, as if the (OP) impacted you to such a degree that you are fed up beyond fed up...."

The false bravado that the OP is calling out is also seen on the threads where people justify their need for WalMarts and SUVs or whatever and insist that their purchasing power doesn't make any difference in the scheme of things.

"So I apologize for the harshness of my assessment, but I just can't stand false premises and prophets."

Your apology rings hollow. Your accusations are unfounded. And I just can't stand self-fulfilling prophecies of disempowerment and ineffectual attitudes.

61. Sorry, That Did Nothing To Sway Me. My Assessment Stands Firm.
You weren't just asking for a boycott. You were declaring with condescension that we are too comfy and that it's about time we 'put up or shut up', as if you are some leader of some new revolutionary idea that can stop this war. But all I saw was some ineffective no-sacrifice-whatsoever comfy from your computer call to just simply not shop today. That isn't putting up or shutting up, Omega, sorry. To truly 'put up or shut up' would require far more effort and sacrifice then typing from a computer to not shop today, which in the end will go completely unnoticed and have absolutely ZERO impact.

In my opinion, if you're going to snub your nose at DU'ers and act that we're not taking the war and it's being stopped seriously enough, you could at least come up with some real and meaningful show of effort and strategy to show you're out there truly taking it seriously. Asking "hey, don't buy anything today!" is not even close.

And I'm not saying there isn't some virtue to your wanting people to think about where there money goes. But that wasn't the point. Had you had just made the simple point and request I would've had no problem. It was the condescension and seeming declarations of "You aren't taking this seriously enough! Didn't you see the images! I'm taking it seriously enough, you need to be like meeeeeee!!!!! Get up off your asses and put up or shut up!" while not actually putting forth anything that would lead anyone to believe you are any less comfy or doing anything more than they are to put an end to this war.

You can't call out DU'ers to be challenged to do more, and tell them they are all talk and need to put up or shut up, and infer they aren't taking closure of this war seriously enough, while then doing nothing more than from the comfort of your computer asking a few people to just not shop today. That ain't put'in up or shut'in up Omega.

So again, my problem wasn't with your intent of getting people to think about how they spend their money today, even though I do consider it to be a completely ineffective action call. My problem was with the hypocritical condescension throughout your thread.

Bye now.

62. The information was posted for someone with an open mind
As I said, it is up to you how you want to view your own dis/empowerment and you are in no position to judge me.

As I said, I would not have replied to you, except that the info-- minus your invective-- might interest someone else.

The reason that I ususally refuse to reply to you is that you intentionally distort and inflame as here:

"In my opinion, if you're going to snub your nose at DU'ers and act that we're not taking the war and it's being stopped seriously enough.... It was the condescension and seeming declarations of "You aren't taking this seriously enough! Didn't you see the images! I'm taking it seriously enough, you need to be like meeeeeee!!!!! "It was the condescension and seeming declarations" --The important word being "seeming." What "seems" to you is not the be all and end all here. I am not responsbile for your insecurities and you are not responsible for misinterpreting my posts for others. I still don't know what kind of game this is for you, but I have told you many times that I refuse to play.

I trust that DUers who actually read what I post will not fall for your phony paraphrasing. I don't care what you think and would never try to "sway" you, because, as usual, you have posted an inflammatory misrepresentation trying to deflect from the real issues.

64. Well That Ain't Gonna Fly. They're Your Words Omega, I Haven't Twisted Anything.
Your words, Omega. Your condescension, your holier than though declarations:

"the people who actually use that language DON'T have the spine to actually DO anything"

"an invitation for all the macho trash talkers to show us what they're really made of, stand up, do something and/or put their money where their (foul) mouth is."

"the trashtalkers and macho poseurs never seem to actually do anything"

"Because: GD returned from the table to bs and ignore the war."

"Do macho epithets add up to effective directed action or sceered, impotent whining?"

"Time to put up or shut up."

"But this (not) absurd (enough) OP title was an invitation and a challenge to US, to US here, to US to do something, to SKIP the media that is sanitized and the Democrats who are compromised and DO SOMETHING."

"If that macho energy is more than gutless trashtalk, then folks need to get it together and quit waiting for others to lead or act on their behalf."

Those are all yours. You're acting like so many here are doing nothing and snubbing your noses at them. You say 'put up or shut up', as if this minuscule request to not shop today is equal to that. You say GD is BS and is ignoring the war, as if you don't partake in the BS or are putting some super stellar effort yourself into stopping it, though merely asking a few people to not shop today from the comfort of your computer doesn't equate to that. You say you challenge DU to do something, with some seeming sense of urgency and importance, yet all you came up with as 'DOING SOMETHING' was a quick ineffective request to not shop today and then calling it a day as if that was enough to answer the challenge and put up or shut up. You call out other DU'ers by implying they are issuing nothing more than macho energy and gutless trashtalk, while acting like this simple zero impact request of Buy nothing day is enough to consider yourself not part of it.

Sorry, but this thread wreaks of condescension and false clarion calls. I haven't twisted a thing. It's all here. They're your words, and yours alone.

Had you just posted a simple premise and request of asking others to not buy anything today because even if it is a small act at least it's something, I would've thought it to be fine. But instead you posted it under a title that offended several, while repeatedly throughout the thread referencing animosity towards other DU'ers while acting superior to them. You even said GD is BS and that we ignore the war. But I have news for you: A simple no-effort-required request to not buy anything today is not a call to arms, is not a challenge, and does not an anti-war hero make. If you want to challenge DU, if you want to call out others as doing nothing more than gutless trashtalk, if you want put down GD as ignoring the war, if you are going to shout out to everybody that it's time to "Put up or shut up", then I'd think it reasonable to ask that you come up with something that requires a little bit more effort on your part. I don't think I'm wrong to read into this thread this way or to recognize hypocrisy within it.

66. My words are fine. It's your misinterpretation that's twisted.
You quoted the "ballsiest" of my comments and completely ignored the affirmative tone of the OP. If you want to fixate on that and interpret the posts the way you do, that's your business. However, again, I am not responsible for your insecurities and it is not your place to MISREPRESENT what I am saying via your own filter and protest the strawmen that YOU set up.

"Had you just posted a simple premise and request of asking others to not buy anything today because even if it is a small act at least it's something, I would've thought it to be fine."

I told you, I don't care what you think. You have no right to lie about "what I said" or make demands.

"I don't think I'm wrong to read into this thread this way or to recognize hypocrisy within it."

Yes. You Are.

Can you recognize your own hypocrisy:

"But instead you posted it under a title that offended several.........."

I stand by my words. I refuse to be poorly paraphrased by you.

70. I Have Issued No Lies, I Have Made No Misrepresentations And You Have Refuted None Of It.
Just trying to undermine my responses as simply being twisted, lies and misrepresentations just by only saying so without providing ANY substance to back those claims up, is not a refutation. You criticize my choice of quotes as if they are out of context or something. This isn't just one quote I picked out of thin air. I had a list of like what, ten? From this thread alone? I'm pretty sure they speak for themselves when being referenced towards the context of my criticisms and why I offered them to begin with.

I'm sure many here got the same vibe from some of the posts in this thread as I had: That it was a false clarion call with many tones of hypocritical condescension while putting our community down. I have laid out quite a few substantial reasons as to why I felt this to be the case. You haven't refuted any of my points; you've only dismissed them completely.

I think I've more than said my feelings on the OP and backed it up more than enough to no longer have to continue on. I'm confident others can read the context of this subthread for themselves and make up their own minds as to what the reality of it is. It also doesn't really bother me that you don't care what I think. I only ask that before you put down or dismiss this community or members within it, that you think a little harder first as to whether you have the standing or merit to do so. That's all I ask.

Thanks and goodnight. :hi:

65. Okay. I can get past the inelegant language.
Why? Because my sentiments, while not wrapped in those particular terms, match.

I've had it with the media and the party machines. I don't need balls. I've got ovaries, and I'm plenty capable of getting to the point, unlike the U.S. media, party machines, and much of the population.

Cut off funding. Now.

71. You mean "end our involvement in it".
Because the war isn't going to stop when we go. If we were to go. Which we're not. I'm afraid bitchslapping this war out of existence is a completely unrealistic idea. We could possibly make enough noise to get our troops pulled but that isn't going to stop the killing by any stretch. We are in a real fucked up position right now thanks to these neo-con assholes. The reality is that the best way out of the situation and by "best" I mean least fucked up for everyone, will require that troops stay there for a while longer.
