I don't have any conservatives in my family. I want to hear how it went from others.

My righty in-laws looked despondent when politics were discussed - like their gut wanted them to jump in and denounce the "left", but their head told them "shut up - there's no way to defend what you're about to say".
My lefty in-laws were more outspoken, more confident.
Good thing Dr. Dean's Rumsfeldian loss wasn't worse than it was!

4. There was absolutely no discussion of politics |
|
in either household I went to. My in-laws were quiet but are never really "in your face" with politics although my father in law and I did get into some mildly heated discussions about Iraq.
The other household has a group of righties that were pretty outspoken, including a twenty something jerk cousin I got into a heated argument with about military service (I did, he refused to even consider it) and they were also completely quiet.
It is a difference between the left and the right. We feel no need to shove it down the throats of those we disagree with. If the Democrats had lost this election, you can bet they would have been gloating and strutting around like banty roosters.
Their silence was enough for me. That is how you know they have been beaten. They STFU for once.

I had to put up with such taunting after bush won the last one. I was getting text messages, phone calls, emails all "we won, ha ha ha" The only thing that ended it was my questioning them as to why if they supported bush & the war why they were not enlisting. As the poll numbers have been dropping & they are not in the majority I have been hearing less & less. Yesterday NOTHING, not a word! Not everyone in our family is a rightnut, in fact most are not but just a few of them sprinkled throughout a gathering can be miserable!!!

12. not a single person taunted me after 2004. they were incredibly quiet |
|
if one opened their mouth all would have been unleashed wit no holds back. they had no desire to taunt, lol. i only say this cause i think it odd when i hear people were taunted after that election. i was soooo pissed i was waiting for one word. hubby totally a political was so disgusted he turned off all news for at least 30 days. when i told family that it really left an impact on my people. he is so nonconfrontational and not into this stuff, they realy respected him when he did that.
not a soul taunted. and no one brings it up in our house. i am so far ahead of them in knowledge they dont even try.
i gave them the same respect this year. but then those rw friends of hubby, when they called, i had no problem with we kicked your ass.

5. My FIL started about the "damn liberals" on the SCOTUS |
|
Edited on Fri Nov-24-06 11:28 AM by Coventina
But I stopped him cold by pointing out that 7 out of the 9 justices are Republican appointees.
He then snarled that he is going to move to Australia.
That was the only discussion of politics at our get-together.
:D
on edit: having holiday hang-over. There are 9 justices, not 10!
:dunce:

6. my republican family members are not neocons |
|
but they were pretty meek about politics. They would not talk gay marriage and when the war came up said how sorry they were they voted for Bush.
(The original neocons were once Democrats and apart from being war mongers were liberal on social issues. My GOP relatives think they are social conservatives and vote GOP because dad did or husband does. I'm wokring on the kids and think I've got the parents' vote neutralized as at least one kid voted and voted Dem.)

Our daughter and son-in-law couldn't make it because there was a death in his family and they were out of town for the funeral on Wednesday. They (Actually he) are the most sheeplike family members in their undying loyalty to * although they can be shouted down (Grandma gets on my ass big time when I do it however). There were a couple of good arguments about guns with some of the grandkids and their significant others (we're all hunters but our opinions about who represents the biggest threat to gun ownership is what causes most of the disagreement) but the more everyone drank the more mellow it got. All in all a pleasant family holiday - we had 18 in attendance.

10. No conservatives here. Just an anarchist. |
|
My mom turned to me at the dinner table and said, "Well, we haven't talked about the election yet; what do you think about that?" She's the staunch Democrat in the family.
I said that I was pleased, but cautious. She asked why. I said that I liked Democrats better before I became one, and that I didn't trust them to do what needed to be done. I said I would be overjoyed if we could replace the Bush administration and his republican support in congress with random selections from the nearest penitentiary; anyone would be better. Whether or not Democrats would really take decisive action to end the war in Iraq, rebuild the civil liberties eroded by the Bush administration, and focus on the domestic issues that rank and file Americans need to be addressed was another story, and I would be watching closely to see how it played out. I said I wasn't happy with the beginning, choosing Pelosi as Speaker. She started to ask why, and the child at the table intervened to turn the conversation to a topic of interest to him. The anarchist supported him, and smoothly changed the subject. End of political conversation.

No disagreements - spent it with my local liberal friends at my friendly local Unitarian Church Turkey Day Potluck Dinner.
(They really liked my dressing and my chocolate cream cheese pie).
