A hilarious review in today's UK Daily Mail on Gore Vidal's latest |
|
Edited on Fri Nov-24-06 04:06 PM by KCabotDullesMarxIII
book, Point to Point Navigation, by their literary reviewer, Peter Lewis.
Here are a few of Vidal's gems as quoted by Lewis in his article. It begins:
"We have grown so accustomed to being hectored from Washington by powerful men of breath-taking naivety that I forgot what it was like to be addressed by intelligent, civilised Americans. They still exist. Gore Vidal, in particular, still reflects and writes in superb English."
(snip)
'Liberal'", now a pejorative word, he observes, "is interpreted to mean 'narcissistic'".
'A concern for others is self-love at its least attractive, apparently, while greed is a sign of the highest altruism. To reverse the meanings of words is a small price to pay for our vast freedom to conform and consume.'
(snip)
'You're like a visiting ambassador', I once said to him, 'but where do you represent?'
'Sanity', he replied smoothly, a small country, but there are those of us who love it.'
Beat that for hilarious irony.
(I believe the copyright in the article is owned by a company called, Solo Syndications. The paragraphs are very small, so I ventured to quote 5 of them).

4. Unfortunately, no. I looked for it on their website, and even googled |
|
the reviewer's name without success.
I wanted to enquire about posting (more of the article) on here, but was told by the Mail nght-desk person that I'd need to contact Solo Syndication on Monday.
Anyway, they were the really witty parts: his quotations.

Vidal, what a brilliant line....he never fails to dazzle and enlighten with his keen wit, exposing observations & insightful knowledge, whether it be about history or human nature.
I've always been a great admirer of Gore Vidal's writings & lectures. (I also voted for him when he ran for US Senator).
I'd recognize his work anywhere.
