Pharmauceutical Companies fear Democrats |
|
Edited on Fri Nov-24-06 05:44 PM by happydreams
A NYT article cites drug companies being on the defensive with dems now in control of Congress. WASHINGTON, Nov. 23 — Alarmed at the prospect of Democratic control of Congress, top executives from two dozen drug companies met here last week to assess what appears to them to be a harsh new political climate, and to draft a battle plan.... http://www.nytimes.com/2006/11/24/washington/24drug.html?_r=1&hp&ex=1164344400&en=7c60b707e8f54c7c&ei=5094&partner=homepage&oref=sloginHere some info on the Bush cabals link to drug companies: ...In March 2001, Rove met with executives from Intel, successfully advocating a merger between a Dutch company and an Intel company supplier. Rove owned $100,000 in Intel stock at the time. In June 2001, Rove met with two pharmaceutical industry lobbyists. At the time, Rove held almost $250,000 in drug industry stocks. On 30 June 2001, Rove divested his stocks in 23 companies, which included more than $100,000 in each Enron, Boeing, General Electric, and Pfizer. On 30 June 2001, the White House admitted that Rove was involved in administration energy policy meetings, while at the same time holding stock in energy companies including Enron.... http://prorev.com/bush3.htmPoppy Bush was director of Eli Lilly, the co. that first brought LSD into the US. The family is invested in Pfizer. ...Eli Lilly faces hundreds of civil lawsuits from parents who blame thimerosal for their autistic children. But the pharmaceutical giant has powerful friends in the White House and in Congress. The elder George Bush sat on Lilly’s board of directors in the 1970s, and White House Budget Director Mitch Daniels was a Lilly executive. Lilly CEO Sidney Taurel was named by President George W. Bush to the Homeland Security Advisory Council. In November 2002, Congress passed a provision, tucked into a spending measure for homeland security, to indemnify Eli Lilly from lawsuits and require families to seek compensation through the federally funded Vaccine Injury Compensation Program. It was repealed in February 2003 after public outcry. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-Tenn.) still hopes to pass a similar bill. Congressional consideration for Eli Lilly makes sense: In the 2002 election cycle, the company gave more than $1.5 million to federal candidates, with three quarters to Republicans, making it the fourth-biggest giver in the pharmaceutical industry, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. In the current election cycle, the company already has given close to $230,000 (67 percent to Republicans) to federal candidates.....http://www.inthesetimes.com/site/main/article/649/

1. Shit, they'll probably buy the democrats, too. |
|
Sorry to be such a pessimist, but I do think that control of our destiny has passed out of our hands and into the hands of the corporate interests. And many of those unemployed republican staffers will prolly learn to make nice with their democratic successors.

2. the more I think of it, |
|
our present day is more comparable to the Tea Pot Dome scandal years than ever before. We're fucked, no matter how hard a person works or tries, they are held down by the moneyed interests. Everything has gone "global" while we remain "local" and there is no way to turn back the clock and have solidarity for our own interests.

7. Dorgan and Snowe are set to introduce a bill to allow Canadian drugs into the US sans restriction. |
|
When asked about it, and the effect of lowering profits for the drug companies, Dorgan basicly said, "That's what we mean to do."
I've always liked Susan Collins and Olympia Snowe, myself...and Dorgan kicks butt sometimes!
