Poll question: If you could ADD a holiday, which one would it be? |
|
This is a takeoff on the post from yesterday asking DUers which holiday they would get rid of if they could. A large number of posters felt we actually needed MORE holidays. So, if we added one, which would it be?

12. National Fireworks Night - it would be the Saturday after Labor Day. |
|
Everyone spends the day picnicking and lightning firecrackers and smoke balls during the day, then spends the whole evening lighting fireworks. And fireworks are legal everywhere in the country for that one day and night.

the same activities as the 4th. In fact the weather is better in most areas of the U.S. in September than in July. Unless there's a hurricane. But November (when England has its fireworks night (Guy Fawkes Day) is too cold in many areas of the U.S. to have an outdoor-type holiday.

16. I would like a day that would honor indigeneous and immigrants. |
|
After all these years, are holidays are heavily tipped toward a white European heritage. I like Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Veterans Day because they cross most waves of our heritage.
I believe there are too many people who deny their own immigrant heritage and don't appreciate that we took the land away from indigeneous people.
Perhaps it could be called Appreciate All Of Us Day.

18. One possibility: Turn Columbus Day into *Immigrant Day*... |
|
... I suggest that it dispenses with what's bad about Columbus, while keeping what's good (yes - imo, it isn't ALL bad).
It's inclusive, and affirming of one of the fundamental ideals that we (should) foster in America. And it also subtly reminds Americans that there's a bigger world out there, filled with societies that are very different, most of which contributed to ours.
Thoughts?
(Note: I considered the issue "Well, native Americans won't dig it so much". Not to minimize their predicted antipathy for it, but if you think about it, they would hate ANY holiday that *America* institutes. So if their "no vote" on my proposal is accepted, it seems like consistency would require that we get rid of *ALL* national holidays. If the reader is down with that, fine - I'd rather go for something less extreme - if for no other reason than that it's perfectly possible to acknowledge the among-the-world's-greatest-evils-ever that was done to native Americans, and *still* acknowledge other things that America has done that are (substantially) good. America's acceptance of immigrants (not without flaws - some very substantial) is one of them.)

38. I'd love an August holiday |
|
that will give me an excuse to take a day off on my birthday. I was considering May Day as the "real" Labor Day since that commemorates the Haymarket Riots (and you can thank the labor movement for weekends and 8 hour days).
On reflection, I chose Election Day. I take it off anyway to serve as an election judge, and if we got the day off as a Federal holiday, more people could vote.

Wall Of Voodoo Animal Day Lyrics
Grandma is a rhino My brother is a dog I can tell it's Animal Day 'Cause my best friend just turned into a frog
Mommy is a monkey My girlfriend is a horse But I'm not turning into anything–– I never caused animal wars!
Uh-oh! Fur has covered my hands! I'd better run to the mirror! I'm an animal!
Chorus: It's Animal Day It's Animal Day It's Animal Day It's Animal Day
Now the animals have cars They're starting to run us over Notches on the steering wheel My pet is calling me Rover
Deers are hunting for humans Seals keep crushing our heads Animals betting on us at the track My animal's in my bed

But would actually prefer the last Monday of EVERY month to promote three day weekends for the majority of Americans.Take existing holidays and roll them in...Let's see... January,Valentines weekend..February,Easter/St. Patrick's weekend..March,March Fool's weekend..April International Workers weekend..May,Memorial Day weekend..June,Patriots/4th of July weekend..July,Summerfest weekend..August,Labor Day weekend..September,Columbus Day weekend..October,Halloween Weekend..November,Thanksgiving weekend..and finally December,Christmas/Kwanzaa/Hannukah/Yule weekend.
The advantages are obvious-about the same number of Nationally recognized holidays as now exist, but more regularly spaced. Each religion/sect/group could celebrate each holiday in it's own appropriate manner.Never more than 5 work weeks between holidays.
The only downside is for those more mentally tied to the dates rather than the spirit of any given holiday and to those who normally work weekends and holidays.I don't NEED holidays on two consecutive weeks in the winter, but three days at the end of July would be bliss.Incidentally, if I had 2 weeks vacation, then 10 four day weekends sounds sweet.

National Your Name Here Day
For immediate release:
To avoid further clutter in the calendar as various groups wish to have a day in honor of themselves or some fallen leader, National Your Name Here Day will be celebrated with a long weekend in the month with the fewest holidays. Want to honor the witches of Salem? Want to celebrate Estonian heritage? Vegetarians Who Eat Pepperoni and Persecuted Episcopalians.....this is your day.

46. National Government Accountability Day .... |
|
... A day on which every Government Official must answer all questions posed by the citizens and the press, and 'no comment' is not allowed. They also must disclose all information requested by the citizenry except for matters that directly involve national security and/or are privileged.
The people and the government officials would be reminded that this government works for 'us', and the government officials must answer to the people.
It might be logistically impossible to pull off, but it would force the government officials to anticipate the coming 'holiday' and remind them that the people will be requiring answers on that day. That in itself could make government more responsive and more responsible.
My second choice would be election day.

As a bonus, September 17th is also the anniversary of the battle of Myriokephalon (1176) between the Byzantine Empire and the Seljuk Turks in Phrygia. Or if you're so inclined, the date when Joshua Norton crowned himself Emperor of the United States in 1859 (more of those San Francisco values we keep hearing about).
