Screw the draft, here is my crazy (and probably a little dumb) idea:
When running for congress you get a running mate.

Whomever votes for war gets to go and assist the troops in the field (on ships, command centers, etc) and must stay until the job is done. Their running mate stays in congress in their stead.

If someone really really believed a war was just and would save the people, they would be out there (as would I if I were able, hell I could work in the mess hall or something). You vote, you go and lead by example.

If you vote for the need for a draft, your kids must be the first to sign up - if you are willing to sacrifice someone's kids, you start with your own.

Yeah, I know - harsh and cold, does not take X or Y into consideration, and will never happen.

But I kinda like myself, so :P

1. I've proposed that as a Constitutional amendment:
Something like,

1. Article 1: No president shall send U.S. military forces into combat or peacekeeping or advisory roles without a 2/3 vote of Congress specifically authorizing such a deployment.

2. Article 2: In the event of such a troop deployment, the draft-age first and second-degree relatives of the president, the Cabinet, and the members of Congress who voted for the deployment shall be the first to be drafted for combat duty.

5. Wouldn't have to be combat related :)
And there could be exceptions of course.

And I just cracked open my first beer of the night ;)
