BUT, what *exactly* do we think the outcome of this should be?


Should he pay money as penance? Is an apology enough? Should he make a tour of schools to repent? Should he be flogged in public? Should he be the subject of 239 new threads over the weekend here at DU?


WHAT would you think Richards should do to make up for his insulting tirade at his show?


(I really am curious here. Richards has umpteen threads about the usage of a word and Rape in Darfur gets maybe one post a day - - so I will ride the "popular" topic and forget Darfur for a day... Although what happens in Darfur daily sickens me far worse than what a pampered Comedian used as a word choice to an audience that could afford to pay in admission more than what most Darfurian people see in MONTHS.... In any truly civilized society, a racist comment would be looked upon as a sign of ignorance and poor breeding, as if the offender was a step behind in the evolutionary process. Although some would choose not to believe it, we are all racists and bigots to some degree underneath, but only the backwards let these thoughts float to the surface (as opposed to the phsychologically unbalanced, who march in rallies and commit violent hate crimes)

If a friend viciously insulted a family member (and that's pretty much racism in a nutshell), I think most of us would dispense with lawsuits and protests and merely give that friend the silent treatment for the rest of our lives. That's what I think we should do with Michael Richards, and that's pretty much what we were all going to do anyway.
