Why didn't John Fogerty sing the anti-war part of "Fortunate Son" on national TV?
http://www.attytood.com/2006/11/why_didnt_john_fogerty_sing_th_1.html

We tend to do things backwards here at Attytood, which is why we took a brief nap before our Thanksgiving turkey yesterday. When we woke up, it was halftime of the Miami Dolphins-Detroit Lions game, and featured guest John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival fame was wrapping up his show.

Given the fact that Fogerty's gig was apparently a co-production of the NFL and the United Way, one song we would not have expected was CCR's great progressive anthem, "Fortunate Son," the tune about rich people avoiding the draft -- i.e., a song about George W. Bush before the world knew there was going to be a George W. Bush.

So it was we were a bit surprised to wake up and see the now 61-year-old Fogerty warbling the angry chorus to "Fortunate Son," then the guitar break. We waited for the devastating lines that come after the solo...but instead Fogerty seemed to skip them and go straight for the final chorus.

Here are the words we didn't hear on national TV:

Yeh, some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
ooh, they send you down to war, Lord,

And when you ask them, how much should we give,

oh, they only answer, more, more, more, yoh,

2. GREAT energy... you got that right
That guy is amazing. And he must be in his sixties by now. Great song, never more appropriate than 2006... except maybe in 2007. And 2008. And 2009...

What happened to rebellion? Like when Jim Morrison sang "We couldn't get much higher" even if it meant never appearing on Ed Sullivan again.

edit another typo

7. And the Rolling Stones had to sing
Let's spend the day together, instead of Let's spend the night together.

5. I don't know, but it does seem to be sort of a glass-half-empty view of a great song. n/t

6. He was doing a compilation version of the song
I was surprised that he even played it... I think the point got across.

8. Fogerty's anti-war credentials are very solid.
Measure whatever he left out of "Fortunate Son" against his tendency to be ahead of the curve since roughly 1969/70 ("Effigy," "It Came Out Of The Sky," "Ramble Tamble," et al) and he has no apologies to make.
