Hastert, "Dejected" And "Embarrassed," Says He Will Retain Seat For Now
Click here for the whole story.

<snip>

Hastert will be the first House Speaker to leave the House leadership but remain in Congress since Joseph Martin Jr. (R-MA), who was House Speaker in 1953 and 1954.

Friends say that Hastert is "dejected" and "embarrassed" by the Republicans' loss of House control. That loss is connected in part to the scandal surrounding former Rep. Mark Foley (R-FL), a scandal that led various House leaders -- including John Boehner, Thomas Reynolds and Roy Blunt -- to publicly chastise Hastert.

1. He has to "retain" his seat
he's gotten so fat he's "stuck" in it.

2. I fully expect him and many others like him to retire in the next year or so
They are used to the percs of power and the power itself. They will not be able to take being without and the realization will sink into them bythe end of '07 that Republicans are not going to regain the majority in '08. They will retire and Democrats will pick up more seats. Things are going to get better...:-)

11. I look for him to have "health problems" and retire before his term ends
That will give him a chance to retain some dignity..

We'll see how the investigation of the Foley incident go..That will determine the departure date. If the hearings start to implicate him, he'll bolt, and of course if his "health" is at stake, they'll lay off him ..

It's how they always wiggle out of things,,

5. He should have been "embarrassed" long before the election
"...he is hoping for a favorable response from the House Ethics Committee, which is investigating whether he or his staff acted properly in dealing with warnings about improper conduct toward Congressional pages by Foley."

7. And I think this will be his last term
He has no incentive to run again in 2008, he's gone from Speaker to backbencher and faded into obscurity.

9. Geo.WILL disdainfully called him "a mechanic" when he first took over.
Well, "took over" by default. After GRINGRICH's -------DISGRACE------and LIVINGSTON's-------DISGRACE--------and the Rethugs had to dig deep to find ONE Rethug among themselves who might not have to be made to resign right away. WILL shrugged with disdain and said essentially that Denny was a non-entity.
