Student group offers scholarship for whites only
POSTED: 10:29 a.m. EST, November 22, 2006
BOSTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) -- A Boston University student group is offering a scholarship for white students to protest financial aid programs in the United States that select by ethnic background, university officials said on Tuesday.

The group, Boston University College Republicans, told campus publications the $250 Caucasian Achievement and Recognition Scholarship was intended as a statement and they had raised funds privately for the award, which does not have the backing of the university.

"We think giving out a scholarship based on any race is crazy," Joe Mroszczyk, president of the group, told the college's BU Today Web site.

Boston University Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore said he believed the move was misguided.

"Our goal is to try to increase diversity on the campus, and that usually means diversity from an ethnic and racial standpoint," Elmore said. "This scholarship does not further that goal."

U.S. colleges commonly use financial aid packages, which include grants and loans, to attract students with diverse characteristics, from sporting abilities to ethnic backgrounds.

Tuition at the private Boston University, which has more than 31,000 students, costs $33,330 per year, and with room and board a student's expenses can top $44,000

1. REPUBLICAN student group, mind you...REPUBLICAN.
Jesus, I've never seen a bunch of well fed, white pricks so worried about gettin' theirs....if it's not BU, it's Michigan....Christ, they need to worry less about the poor guy getting a leg up and worry more about giving back to society for the benefits they've received all their pampered lives.

And on top of everything else, they're CHEAP fuckers. Two hundred fifty bucks? That wouldn't buy pizza for their bunch of soft, pimpled club members on a Friday night.

11. Pampered lives? Are you saying all whites have pampered lives?
Edited on Sun Nov-26-06 11:23 AM by lizzy
Why wasn't I informed on that?
It would be nice to know I was supposed to have a pampered life when I didn't have enough money to buy food.

3. That should buy them One, if lucky Two, TEXTBOOKS

Incidentally, the concept of diversity at colleges is nothing new. My daughter's best friend's mother graduated 30 plus years ago on a scholarship from Boston College. She is a practicing Jew. No, she didn't have to attend Mass or take Bible classes.

6. I don't think it's being offered for the purpose of buying much, it's being offered as a statement.

8. I must have missed those scholarships. I had to join the Army to pay for College.
And I'm still in debt for what that didn't cover. Which scholarships are you referring to as I'm considering going back to school?

13. Ummm, no. I seem to remember a lot of scholarships for non-whites, or religious based scholarships,
or scholarships for farmers and other unique categories, but not a whole hell of a lot for poor small town white atheists.
Luckily I had a 4.0 so things worked out ok, but I definitely missed the white scholarship fund.

14. At the college where my parents graduated
There were a lot of scholarships that alumni set up. Some of those scholarships were for students living in a particuliar county, graduating from a particuliar high school, attending a particliar church, or having a parent working at a particuliar company or belonging to a particuliar organization. I suppose that some of these criteria almost guarenteed that the recipient was white. Whites that didn't meet the specific criteria were excluded too, of course.

17. Fine, If you lived through segregation then the gov't should foot the bill but
I don't believe in inherited crimes. Economic condition can be inherited, but if it's economics condition were addressing then lets see the system based on economics, not race.

Of course my real position is higher education should be 100% free and guaranteed to all.

10. I think it's more of a joke. Also, the recipient only needs to be
quarter white.
Basically that means recipients of that scholarship might not look white at all.

19. Yep. Way too much attention for a measly $250.
But there's a mother out there bragging about her son the "president."
