Rumsfeld OK'd abuse of Abu Ghraib detainees - former prison chief

The former United States commander at Baghdad's Abu Ghraib prison says the outgoing US Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld authorised the mistreatment of detainees at the prison.

Former US Army Brigadier-General Janis Karpinski, who ran the prison until early 2004, says she has seen a letter apparently signed by Mr Rumsfeld that allowed civilian contractors to use techniques such as sleep deprivation during interrogation.

She says she saw a memorandum signed by Mr Rumsfeld detailing the use of harsh interrogation methods.

A spokesman for the Pentagon declined to comment on the allegations.

4. I hope she made copies of that memorandum.....I'm sure the Pentagon

has been VERY, VERY busy shredding these kind of papers....The Pentagon Papers. Cheney probably sent his shredder truck over to the Pentagon as soon as they finished shredding his Halliburton Papers.
