Poll question: Is it time for martial law in Iraq? |
|
It's so unbelievable sad that it may have come to this, but I see no other option right now in Iraq other than to increase the troops and declare martial law. Things are just getting worse and worse with every passing day. They need to be oppressed maybe more so than under Saddam just to restore some sense of order and/or security. What a fucking shitstorm. I want Bush BEHIND BARS.

1. There isn't anyway to enforce such an order. |
|
We don't have the troops. And the Iraqi troops won't do it.

deal at this point. We need to ask for Arab states to step in if there's to be a local solution beyond permanent occupation.
They have lived with the Sunni/Shia divide for generations and understand the situation far better than we. Stability, much more so than democracy, would seem more important to the Arab states. I think Washington has come to this conclusion, as well.
Iraq still sits atop a vast oil reserve.
The world, and Washington, realizes the unilateral ploy has failed miserably.
My blind guess is that Cheney's "visit" to the Saudis yesterday was a piece of that picture. And the Iraq Study Group's assessment may play into a regional (ie Arab) decision, as well.
(aside) The Kurds may have already won a certain amount of lasting autonomy, if not outright independence, due to the massive Western/European/Middle East investments funneled into the relatively stable Kurdistan of Iraq. With or without direct oil revenue, they may be able to build an international trading role.

4. I've read/heard that Turkey and Iran |
|
have already been attacking the Kurds.
The information about what is going on there is too much for me to process. All I know is that Bush broke it and everything is a horrific mess.

6. I know Turkey doesn't want an independent Kurdistan (Turkey's |
|
southern province is predominately Kurdish and has long been ripe for violent secession). Like much of the Middle East, the political boundary doesn't match the cultural division. I agree, though, it's hard to track "who's who" at times.

Who exactly would enforce Martial Law?
Come to think of it who would be available to enforce Martial Law in this country? Local and State police would have to be nationalized. Think those local officers would participate in that? hmmm?

Republican Senators and Congressman, Chimpy's Cabinet, Fox News executives and reporters and fundamentalist preachers and anyone else who thinks if we fight them there we won't have to fight them here. Give them 5 days to get their collectives asses over there. Let them parachute into the green zone. It would be fun to watch. Make em stay until they can figure a way to create a Democracy out of total sectarian chaos. I am not sure how this would be enforced but it certainly is my fantasy solution.

10. Other: Isn't it about time IRAQ started deciding things like this? |
|
Hell, we can train a boy to fight in a foreign country in about 12 weeks. Iraq hasn't been able to train people to fight for their own country yet...and it's been well over three years.
Let the "government" of Iraq decide. They have twelve weeks before we start leaving. I think it's time they started taking responsibility for the security of their own country.
