What's wrong with DU.

I'm a Democrat. I've been lurking here and at freerepublc for years. I hate to say it, but postings on FR are generally much more tech/science savvy than here. Sure, there's the religious anti-evololution, anti global warming stuff there, but they've alse got the hard science news. We're all warm and fuzzy and maybe that anti-evo/science stuff's OK, because we're really tolerant and understanding and we don't want to condemn anyone. We suck.

We think idiots like Lakoff have something to say. We believe in Identity politics. We think whole language is the way to teach linguistic competence. We believe in psychoanalysis, mental illness, cognitive dissonance. We're mired in shoddy attempts to repackage religion and spirituality as science. We're never going to make this a better world if we don't get past this crap.

Unfortunately, I don't see much of a solution. It's not enough for us to go out and scour the news and post stuff. It's not a lack of volume, but a lack of interest and discretion. They have the best and the worst. We, for the most part, have the mediocre.

There must be some reason I shouldn't just kill myself out of utter despair, but this forum doesn't give me much hope.

If by tech savvy you mean someone that knows how each piece of military hardware works, you might be right, but if you want to start asking question that delve beyond the tech numbers and into the physics of things, I think you'd be better off asking folks here. I'm constantly astounded at the speed of the community here to answer almost any question. I don't read your other web site, I've seen enough of their blathering reposted here to last me a lifetime.

that the cutting and pasting of a science article necessarily suggests a more engaged intellect on the FR boards. It does, however, suggest that FR participants are adept at cutting and pasting.

I think you'll find that the Lounge and General Discussion forums are not the places where these types of discussions would take place. I can't offer a suggestion where to find it, however - I tend to not search for science information on DU. I tend to use it for political/public opinion information.

And I'm also not in agreement with your apparent distinction between the "hard" and "soft" sciences, but that is another discussion completely....a somewhat sensitive spot for me as a PhD student in the social sciences.

I'd suggest therapeutic interventions to work through your suicidal ideation, but I detect a distinct lack of interest for clinical mental health work on your part.

You and I must have been reading different Free Republic sites. I've lurked there and trolled on occasion, and my observation has been that 90% of an average Freeper's knowledge has been gleaned from the Rush Limbaugh Show. The creationists have flamed the pro-evolution camp into oblivion, and one of the most noticeable differences between arguments there and here is that DUers often post links to off-site material supporting their side, while freepers almost never do. Well ok, I think we all know you really haven't, but if I were to take you at face value that's the only possible conclusion.

For starters Free Republic doesn't even ALLOW science to be posted there. You know as well as I do that virtually all hard science these days in some way or another flies directly into the face of religious fundamentalism and standard Bush administration policies.

Besides that, here at DU there are forums for everything, and posting things in their proper place is rather strictly enforced. When hard science rises to the level of breaking news it is posted there, and often it is posted here in GD as well. At Freeperville if you see such topics posted at all you will find that upwards of 90% of the replies are mocking and derisive.

And as long as we are on the subject of breaking technology what the HELL is up with their forum software anyway? It looks as if it hasn't seen an update since 1985. I swear going there feels like getting into a time machine. DU has an on staff tech guru and is constantly upgrading. FR has....... well, JimRob has an RV. I guess that's something.

As to why you shouldn't kill yourself, well I responded to your post even though I think we both know you aren't listening. You see, I have hope that there IS common ground to be found. I believe in humanity you see. I think we will eventually rise above this divisiveness, just as we have other uncivilized behaviors. Share my vision and you may find something to hope for.
