What would DUville be like? If we were a city...
I consider myself lucky to live in Tesuque, New Mexico, just outside Santa Fe, a town of 58,000. Regionally known for it's art scene ,food, general liberalism, and natural beauty. Also known for the poverty of the Indegenous Peoples and
Hispanics... Now, As a DUer, if say, for instance, WE, The Democratic Underground had an actual town (village, commonwealth, etc.) that was nothing but members, how would our town of some 98,000, be different or better than anywhere else?

5. Well, thats an honest concern...
I for one, am a bit on the gloomy side, the utter failure on the part of the true progressives to take the lead, change the dialogue, and campaign for real liberty from the centrist/corpratist faction of the Dem's. A REAL voice for the liberals ...Say Dennis Kucinich, and his ideas. Hmmm ...Who are our leaders and what do they teach? Does DUville take a page out of Hugo Chavez' playbook? The Dalai Lama? The Reverend Martin Luther King? I'd like to be in the parks department myself. Maybe teaching Recycling,Animal Husbandry ,Permaculture, Wind and Solar stuff to the wee kiddies and their folks. What else?

6. Hard for open minded tolerant folks to tell others what to do.
Good think DU has enough opinionated people here. For a truly Liberal town? Health care, education, reducing environmental impact would be good starts.

I see people argue opposing sides and ideas here every day. If you can't handle the debate getting heated, that's a personal problem. It doesn't make DU intolerant.

9. I think it could be a fun place
I know in the lounge there are a lot of folks that make me laugh
And in GD there are many that have profound thoughts.
So I think it would have little trouble.
And by the way I live in Espanola, and yes Tesuque is a beautiful place.

It would be a fragmented society at best.

14. Everyone would login to the 'Net-based town council meeting,
The lending library would be really, really interesting, there'd be music in the square every week, and from what I've seen of the varying levels of self-sufficiency and interest, we'd have a thriving barter system and our own home police force.

It wouldn't be all sweetness and light, though. There's enough divergence of opinion here on any number of topics to make those town council meetings a more than lively event. They'd likely all run overtime and there'd be a lot of items tabled for the next meeting.

that not everyone is as forward with their opinions in real life as on a discussion board so I don't think there would necessarily be the shouting matches that some might predict.

17. "A stroll down Sheehan Street
to Chavez Square is well worth a visit to see the local activists on their soapboxes. For these who prefer a quieter life the regimented order of Clarktown is to be recommended or a visit to Kerry National Park to enjoy the popular pursuits of cycling and windsurfing..."

19. It would be great; it would have tons of bookstores and cafes
and art and restaurants from all over the world. It would have bike paths of course and good public transportation to cut down on pollution. It would have a few churches, but they wouldn't have hate-filled fundies in them. It would also tend to not have cookie-cutter places, IMO, like McDonald's and that kind of place, and have more mom and pop businesses.

and there wouldn't be any crime because we would all be busy drinking and posting. But not smoking, cause that would be outlawed. So I would be probably be in the Mayberry like jail cell.

fight a lot. Every week we would have lots of great discussions at a town meeting. EVERYONE would be unionized. The Lounge is a bar with a pool outside.

Some people here are DU are as scary as those in Freeperville. I would have the freedom to do what I want, as long as no one finds any of it offencive. it would scare me.

34. The rules would be established by the owners.
A volunteer police force would enforce those rules.

No free speech allowed.

People would pay a tax to use most town services.

Outsiders would not be welcome.

Dissenters would be evicted.

Gangs would roam the streets, planning for how their particular group could take over the town.

Street fighting would break out every time the town had to choose a representative to send to any contest with other regions.
