After all the soapbox monologues during the campaign supporting "stay the course" in Iraq, Donald Rumsfeld chose "cut and run." He's not fooling anyone. His resignation was not the result of the clear message sent by the American people on Nov. 7. Donald Rumsfeld resigned to dodge responsibility for his actions before the new Congress.
The magnitude of his mistakes is incredulous, comprehensively documented in "Fiasco," "Cobra II," "State of Denial," "Imperial Hubris" and other books. The problems started with his dismissive treatment of the advice of senior military officers and intelligence officials, and his insistence on receiving information that only matched his preconceived notions.
Mistakes continued by starting the war in Iraq with no plan for postwar stability, infrastructure security or even continuity of government. The mistakes were compounded by discarding decades of Pentagon planning on Iraq, dismissing the Iraqi military and most of the government, verbally demeaning soldiers and approving torture techniques for detainees. These mistakes are directly responsible for the chaos in Iraq today, and they are the exact reasons why Rumsfeld did not want to be called to give an account before Congress.
