Leaving Iraq, Honorably by Chuck Hagel (WP)
The time for more U.S. troops in Iraq has passed. We do not have more troops to send and, even if we did, they would not bring a resolution to Iraq. Militaries are built to fight and win wars, not bind together failing nations. We are once again learning a very hard lesson in foreign affairs: America cannot impose a democracy on any nation -- regardless of our noble purpose.

1. Fundamental flaw in logic
Militaries are built, or should be built, for national defense only. "Fighting and winning wars" leaves the door WIDE open.

3. Dear Chuck;

What's with the "we" shit, kemosabe? "WE are once again learning a very hard lesson in foreign affairs"???!

I knew that lesson before the class of shock & awe began. Most the entire world, outside the stupid 50% of Americans, knew that lesson.

Only really deeply stupid, deeply ignorant MFers didn't know that lesson before the bell rang.

So fuck that "we" shit, Chuck. Besides, those who didn't know beforehand, still have not learned a bloody thing now.

9. It's interesting revisionism, isn't it?
Once upon a time, many Americans thought we could 'rescue' people in other nations who were fighting for their own freedoms. That, after all, was how many interpreted our participation in WW2.

There's a fine line between "doing the right thing" and being a melodramatic, codependent 'rescuer' ... especially when that's not at all the reality on the ground.

Hey, we made a big poopy and we can't clean it up. If we leave with our heads up (our asses) no more poopy will come out.

wow what sterling heroes we are. Willing to leave honorably after an ILLEGAL INVASION and no consequences. Just dripping with honor.

Until the Bushies surrender to the Hague there will be no honor for Americans. And we know that's never going to happen. So get ready to be the most reviled group of people in the world for the foreseeable future. Enjoy your flight!

8. Anyone who lived through the Vietnam era...
knows the lie of 'peace with honor'.

Aside from the already noted bullshit rhetoric of our 'noble purpose', and who actually had to learn the lesson ... it's a pretty realistic piece.
