Kerry Rejects Yellow Tie; Opts for Blue One Instead
Edited on Sun Nov-26-06 02:57 PM by smoogatz
In a characteristically bold display of decision-making, John Kerry today selected a blue tie with a tasteful pattern of tiny, silver scottie dogs over a yellow tie festooned with small green diamonds. "It was a close call," Kerry said. "I felt that ultimately the blue tie, with its scottie dog motif, better reflected our national ideals of liberty, decency, cleanliness and doing the right thing. Plus, the yellow one was just too busy with a striped shirt." Kerry's dozen-or-so remaining supporters hailed the decision as "a bold display of decisive decision-making boldness of the sort we've come to expect from someone as bold and decisive as Senator Kerry."

UPDATE: In an apparent bid to appear more Kerry-like, Wes Clark was also seen today wearing a blue tie. Well, blue-green. But still. "Clark is nothing but a big, fat copycat," said a Kerry spokesman. "John Kerry was wearing blue ties years ago, when Clark was still mired in the whole red power-tie thing. The fact that Wes Clark has today shown himself in public in a blue tie is yet another indication that he has nothing bold or decisive to offer the American public in the way of neckwear decision-making."

10. Not only is it not particularly humorous, I find it disrespectful.
The man may not be perfect, and has made mistakes, but he deserves better than this.
Save the snark for more deserving candidates. It shouldn't be hard to find someone that is not one of our own, as imperfect as you may find him to be.
Just my opinion, and I'm sticking with it.

33. Why?
I'm really not seeing this thread is funny because of that other thead, or why the post you're replying to deserved an eye roll. It's true that Kerry is not one of Kos' favorite people, so the post is fairly true. Why does that get an eye roll?

The other thread is about an accusation that Kerry plagerized Clark. I didn't spend a ton of time over there, but I can only imagine there are several Kerry folks defending Kerry.

Is the joke of this thread to taunt those Kerry folks? In that case, I'm not sure why people thought that would be funny, unless they enjoyed watching people getting picked on in grade school.

36. The issue itself is a joke. ONE PERSON'S OPINION ON KOS.
That anyone feels compelled to argue over it -- on a second thread, no less -- is very deserving of an eye roll.

This OP is a parody of the other OP, whether or not you find it humorous.

If you need further explanation of why it was posted, you might want to ask the person who actually wrote it.

47. Thinking about it, I sorta get it. But the satire was ruined with the meanspirited
"dozens of remaining supporters" bit. That was a definite jab. If our OP could have satired the stupid back and forth between the supporters of two different candidates without taking a gratuitous swipe at Kerry and us, it would have gone over better. So we respond, and others on the thread say "Look, that's what we were talking about." It's flamebaiting, at least to some extent.

If the point was that we don't need to fight amongst ourselves over stupid stuff, then the jab at us was a distraction from that. I would hope that was the point. But the swipe belayed that point, and actually perpetuated the fight. It boomeranged.

I'm all for not playing "Fight Club" this time around with the primaries. I'd hope others would agree. I'm not so sure many do though.

43. I saw the Dkos post earlier
and, as you say, it has been responded to. It was one overboard poster.

It is entirely normal for people who are not far away from each other politicly to come up with similar sounding proposals - especially when described superficially. My guess is that Hart, Clark and Kerry (and likely others)all came to somewhat similar conclusions on dealing with terror even before 911. I also assume they even spoke to each other. Hart in writing the Hart/Rudman report likely spoke to Clark and to Kerry, who work on terrorism he praised this year when introducing him in Boston. I assume that Kerry in formulating his proposals in 2004 spoke to Hart and to Clark, who was a key advisor. It is probably not unlikely that Clark chose to speak to these two intelligent men - as well.

The Argyle General
Maureen Dowd

Trying to soften his military image and lure more female voters in New Hampshire, Gen. Wesley Clark switched from navy suits to argyle sweaters. It's an odd strategy. The best way to beat a doctor is not to look like a pharmacist.

<snip>

On Thursday, eight reporters and three minicams trailed the general as he sweater-shopped at L.L. Bean in Concord, N.H. Chris Suellentrop filed a fashion dispatch in Slate that the Democratic candidate tried on "a plain, green, wool crew neck sweater."

<snip>

Al Gore sprouted earth tones in 2000, hoping heathery brown sweaters and khakis would warm him up.

During her Senate campaign, Hillary Clinton emulated Barbara Walters and began tying a sweater around her neck, over suits, to look softer and more feminine.

Sometimes sweaters can do the trick, and sometimes they can't.

Dan Rather, who had been perceived as colder than his predecessor, Walter Cronkite, suddenly got better ratings in 1982 and pulled into first place when he started wearing gray and maroon sweater vests under a sport coat to deliver the news. The Washington Post TV critic Tom Shales hailed Rather's "trust-me, you've-got-a-friend, hello-out-there-in-television-land" aura.

But Jimmy Carter learned how clothes, like rabbits, can viciously turn on you after he gave an energy conservation fireside chat in a gray cardigan. Americans who had embraced Carter's populist polyester blend suits railed against the cardigan, associating it with malaise and economic pain.

I asked Dan Rather about Wesley Clark's sweater strategy.

"It makes a difference what kind of sweater you wear," he replied. "Some sweaters went out of style about the time spats did. You don't want to pick one of those."

55. I will agree not to post rah rah threads. But the news is fair game, sorry.
Rah rah posts like "we need so and so" or "so and so is our only hope" followed by the minions who say he/she's great, he/she's the best and the like, those annoy the shit out of me. You won't catch me doing one of those for Kerry, unless I'M doing a parody.

At least if the post is wrapped around some news like a speech or something, it's valuable. And that goes for any candidates.

I don't understand why people in this thread didn't expect us to react to your OP, considering it's pretty clear there was a jab at us in there (a dozen or so leftover supporters my ass).

I'll try not to post the stupid shit about who said what first blah, blah. But if the dude makes a speech, or gets some legislation passed, or somesuch, I'm afraid you'll have to deal with me and mine saying something about it.

And of course, I expected you guys to react--that's part of the fun of posting something like this. You guys jump on it and say "that's not funny." It's not flamebait, really--much gentler than that. Good-natured ribbing, with a hook in it.

Heh. You're stuck with us I'm afraid. It's not contingent on him running for prez. We just like the big lug. That feeling was only cemented when several of us met him at his birthday party last year. He surprised several of the Kerry group folks at the pub afterwards. I do believe several of us consider him an actual friend.
