Kansas senator (Brownback) weighs White House bid
WASHINGTON - GOP Sen. Sam Brownback (news, bio, voting record) said Sunday he has poured thought and prayer into a forthcoming decision whether to seek the presidency in 2008.

"We're very close with announcements. My wife (Mary) and I and our family have spent a lot of time thinking about this, praying about it, and really considering whether we could bring a message to the country that needs to be discussed," Brownback said. "I think there is room, on the Republican side, for somebody that's a full-scale conservative, that's an economic and fiscal and social conservative."

If Brownback, who was elected in 1996, makes a bid for the White House, he could face better-known challengers such as Arizona Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record) and former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who have set up presidential exploratory committees. Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., also may run.

Brownback, speaking on ABC's "This Week," said there was both room and a need among Republicans "to develop some new plays, particularly on the compassionate conservative agenda."

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that Brownback wins the nom. He's got the fundie chops that McCain and Rudie lack, but he can also mix it up with the DC money boys. Brownback as the Repig candidate will be good news for Dems.

4. Run Sam run!!
If we run a decent candidate (not Hillary or even Kerry) then we could beat Brownback by at least 5%.

5. Sam Brownback: last right wing lunatic left standing.
I'm just kidding of course; there's plenty more where he came from. But he is the biggest name left on the right fringe following the departures of Santorum and Allen. It's like if they did a Beatles reunion now and Ringo was too busy to make it.

7. I have googled him and he's SCARY!
Among other things, he seems to be fanatically anti-stem-cell research, and used a 7-year-old's drawing of an early embryo in a debate. And he attended a "War on Christians" Conference earlier this year - yes, that was the actual name of the conference. And his views on homosexuality would make Santorum look like a moderate. And of course just as hawkish and gung-ho as the others on Iraq.

Please, please, please do NOT let the Republicans inflict him on the world!

Sam Brownback. Duncan Hunter. John McCain. Rudy Giuliani. Mitt Romney. Bill Frist.

Whomever ends up being the Dem nominee, those guys are ducks on a pond.

17. Yes, I think most of all he wants it the most, so he may indeed be underestimated
He probably has the most credibility among the moderates who are still fooled by him, as we all here know he's no moderate at all.

Still, I think he has too much baggage to be a credible nominee, even for the Republicans.

We'll see, my friend. These are sure interesting times. :)

When you see all those names together,
you get a sense of how weak the GOP is
now.
I hear lots of middle of the road people
talking about Obama being inpirational.
How often do you hear that about Mitt Romney?

23. When I hear Brownback I think of a louse...
THE GRAYBACKS SO TENDERLY CLINGING
Words: Anonymous
Music by Henry Clay Work

There were companions on the march, as every soldier found,
With ceaseless zeal in digging deep in every spot around,
And though each hero killed a lot, still thousands more abound,
The graybacks so tenderly clinging.

CHORUS:O! ho! no! no! we never can forget.
Ow-ow! ow-ow! we almost feel them yet;
The busy little grayback teeth in us so firmly set,
Who went with us Marching Through Georgia.

The visitors were never big, in fact were very small.
In silence they put in their work, no sound they made at all;
They thought it was full fun enough to hear the comrades bawl
While graybacks were busily biting.--CHORUS

And never partial were those bugs, no mortal would they spare,
No dignity could keep them off, they just bit everywhere,
And generals could not deny but what each had a share
Of graybacks so constantly nibbling.--CHORUS
