NBC News will now say Iraq is in a Civil War
Edited on Mon Nov-27-06 07:17 AM by qanda
Matt Lauer just announced it on the Today Show.

Here's a brief transcript of what he said:

For months now the White House has rejected claims that the situation in Iraq has deteriorated into Civil War and for the most part news organizations, like NBC, have hesitated to characterize it as such. But, after careful consideration NBC News has decided the change in terminology is warranted that the situation in Iraq with armed militant militarized factions fighting for their own political agendas can now be characterized as Civil War.

Later Kelly O'Donnell did a report and said that the White House disagrees with their decision. No surprise there.

24. The only way the whitehouse can stave off admitting failure is by denying civil war
Thus their denial. Hopefully more news outlets will follow suit. It's time for the whitehouse to trot out a new three word slogan.

26. Maybe they'll begin to give some background now?
‘UNKNOWN AMERICANS’ ARE PROVOKING CIVIL WAR IN IRAQ - By Robert Fisk
The Independent UK 04/29/06

<snip>

The Americans, my interlocutor suspected, are trying to provoke an Iraqi civil war so that Sunni Muslim insurgents spend their energies killing their Shia co-religionists rather than soldiers of the Western occupation forces… “One young Iraqi man told us that he was trained by the Americans as a policeman in Baghdad and he spent 70 per cent of his time learning to drive and 30 per cent in weapons training. They said to him: ‘Come back in a week.’ When he went back, they gave him a mobile phone and told him to drive into a crowded area near a mosque and phone them. He waited in the car but couldn’t get the right mobile signal. So he got out of the car to where he received a better signal. Then his car blew up.”

Impossible, I think to myself. But then I remember how many times Iraqis in Baghdad have told me similar stories.

“There was another man, trained by the Americans for the police. He too was given a mobile and told to drive to an area where there was a crowd - maybe a protest - and to call them and tell them what was happening. Again, his new mobile was not working. So he went to a landline phone and called the Americans and told them: ‘Here I am, in the place you sent me and I can tell you what’s happening here.’ And at that moment there was a big explosion in his car.”

http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article12885.htm

Of course they won't, it will now be portrayed merely as internecine warfare and the US tried oh they tried but the damn savages can't get along and age old tribal rivalries are the sole cause of this civil war.

32. Reminds me....
of the prison breakout performed by the British military to rescue two brit soldiers caught in a car full of explosives in a crowded market (dressedas locals).

Could have been Americans....my memory is fuzzy. Coalition solders nonetheless.

So now they have decided it is to risky to have a blue-eyed guy caught planting the explosives, so they trick the Iraqis into doing it. The story is indeed plausable given what we have seen in Iraq in the past.

34. One painful fact about our gnus media suddenly becomes clear
There are no indie voices, no individual thinkers, writers, researchers or journalists. There are only corporate employees doing the bidding of their corporate masters & baiters.

The fact that they would even "announce" a change in corporate news policy is overshadowed by the fact that such a policy even exists and worse, by the fact that they are only 2.5 years too late.

How many thousands of iraqi lives, and hundreds of US lives and tens of billions of dollars would not have been wasted had they simply done the right thing at the right time?

For admitting that they are going against their normal policy of letting the Whitehouse censor what they can and cannot say????????

How is that for an independent press?

The success of the War has been beyond anyone's dreams and now that the US and the democratically elected government of Iraq in on the verge of victory, the MSM is attempting to defeat our own nation.

43. Funny and a bit of a correction
I find it "funny" that major news organizations (they'll all fall in line now) waited at least a year to actually tell the truth about a situation that has been ongoing with all the same earmarks for at least that time.

Hmmmm wonder why that would be? We all know it couldn't POSSIBLY be that they were trying not to hurt the White House or the Republican party, since the MSM has a horrible liberal bias. Hell the MSM if full of Bush-Haters and conservative-bashers. Matt Lauer is the MOST liberal among them. No that couldn't be it.

Given some time, I'm sure we'll figure out the reason for this strange phenomenon.

And the correction: Actually David Gregory said it was a civil war last night on the NBC Nightly News report regarding the lifting of the curfew in Baghdad.

45. Wow, there is a lot of stuff they shouldn't be admitting in that statement
"They" had been taking their talking points from the White House. "They" decided to not go with the WH talking point about the Civil War in Iraq. The WH is not happy with "they". And lastly, do the "journalists" at NBC do any independent reporting or do they just go with the daily "they" talking points? I don't think NBC wants to be admitting that they run their "newsroom" just like Faux, do they?

This appears to be an exposure of the little men behind the curtain.
