See first post for the answer. Please post a guess at what "some people" see as the problem.

1. **ANSWER**
In this undated photo provided by Lisa Jensen, a wreath is seen in Pagosa Springs, Colo. Pagosa Springs Colorado homeowners are battling over whether a Christmas wreath that includes a peace sign is an anti-Iraq war protest or even a promotion of Satan. (AP Photo/provided by

Colorado subdivision bans Christmas wreath shaped as peace sign
DENVER A homeowners association in the southwestern Colorado town of Pagosa Springs has told one of its residents to take down a Christmas wreath shaped as a peace sign, because it's "divisive."

The association's president says three or four residents have complained the wreath is an anti-Iraq war protest or a symbol of Satan. He says some of those complaining have children serving in Iraq.

The association has threatened Lisa Jensen with a fine of 25-dollars a day until she complies.

Jensen says she wasn't thinking about the war when she hung the wreath, calling it "a spiritual thing." She says she doesn't want to be bullied and won't take it down until after Christmas. Jensen says she doubts the association will be able to make her pay the fine.

37. Some fundies call it the "Broken Cross"
Apparently, one initiation ritual to join a satanic coven is to take a crucifix, turn it upside down, and bend the arms downward.

I read far too many Jack Chick tracts when I was a kid.

Hollywood Satanists, I guess.

Real Satanists, such as they exist, bear no resemblance to what Hollywood portrays (and fundies apparently believe)

Members of the Church of Satan (google it, I'm at work at a Catholic university, and...would rather not track down a link on my work computer) specifically do not believe in Satan, or any deity, and if fact outright deny any possible existence of same. They call themselves Satanists as a counterpoint to the Christian god/Jesus. They do not worship Satan....and the peace sign isn't the symbol they use, either.

Maybe it's centered on the wall, and the windows aren't spaced exactly. Other than that, I don't see a problem, and can therefore assume that it's something as rediculous as this. Peace and her symbols shouldn't be an issue.

30. That extension cord is not rated for outdoor use.
This is clearly a code violation. Unless said extension cord has been properly insulated with a 19-inch swath of hill-billy chrome with a stickiness factor of no less than grade 2, said extension cord must be stapled at 3-inch increments with staples sufficient to penetrate mounting wall at a depth of no fewer than 5 inches.

36. It's time for a new one.

Made this in 2002 - a 8' length of pvc pipe, wrapped with 4 strands of 100 lights. It was a beacon of hope in the lead-up to the invasion, put up as part of our Christmas decorations, and left up until

the 2004 election, when I, um, sorta freaked out - took it down, sat on the kitchen floor weeping and raging, and armed with a pair of kitchen scissors and lopping shears, completely destroyed it.

2006. Hope lives again.

My neighbors no longer sport a gazillion flags and flag decals, and the POWER OF PRIDE and Bush/Cheney stickers are long gone.

Yep, it's time.

45. Symbols only have the meaning People assign to them, which often differ...
Having travelled outside the US it was surprising to discover that seemingly innocuous hand signals we use everyday here are particularly offensive there. So the argument that symbols have universal meaning is not always true.

I just wonder how symbols can be barred "because of their meaning" since the meaning the individual attaches to it and those who see it may be completely different.

Words that incite insurrection or rioting are different since there is general agreement as to what words mean, but symbols are a totally different matter. Unless a symbol is inescapably connected to a group or movement advocating insurrection or rioting, there is general rule in favor of banning symbols.

Most sign ordinances and regulations that 'impinge upon' the display of symbols usually concentrate on the physical aspects of the signage, and not the content of the message related by the symbol. Color, size, location, architectural issues, are all considerations, but content is not a legitimate basis for the banning of same subject to the exceptions mentioned above.
