You should know how deprived some people are in Venezuela. Not like in the US, where you have homeless people with big, fat, satisfied bellies. People are also paid with Venezuelan taxes to attend.
This isn't to say Chávez doesn't have supporters. I'm just saying that Chávez does these things to swell his demonstrations up and misrepresent his support.
Another tactic is fear. An example would be the speech given by Ramírez, the CEO of PDVSA, the national oil company, where he says things such as:
"We have to clearly say, as you have been hearing me say on these subjects and that we are now repeating, we even said it yesterday, that the new PDVSA is red, very red, from top to bottom (applause). "
"I want those of you here to shake off the belief that someone can sanction us, or that someone can criticize us if we express to our people that this company supports President Chávez one hundred percent, it's an issue (applause) that has paralyzed our people, our workers, our employees. "
"We are here supporting Chávez, who is our leader, who is the maximum leader of this Revolution, and we are going to do everything we can to support our President, and whoever doesn't feel comfortable with this outlook, has to cede his place to a Bolivarian (applause, audience chants: 'Ooh, oh! : Chávez will not go!'). ______ that this is what we are telling our workers loud and clear, directly, this is our message. "
"I am filled with indignation, and I am sure you are too, our Board of Directors as well, when we find that there are people who are neutral, or who are bland, that there are people who now say that we are in a process of mutual cooperation, that we need to open this thing up, no sir, whoever here who forgets that we are in the midst of a revolution we are going to beat it to them, but here is this company who is with the President (applause)."
"We are going to free Bolivia, you know, from here we are going to a meeting at the Chancellery because we are taking off all the gloves to determine the future of Bolivia along with Evo Morales. "
