Subdivision bans Christmas wreath with peace sign

By ROBERT WELLER
Associated Press Writer

DENVER (AP) -- In a town in scenic southwestern Colorado homeowners are battling over whether a Christmas wreath that includes a peace sign is an anti-Iraq war protest or even a promotion of Satan. "We have had three or four complaints. Some people have kids in Iraq and they are sensitive," said Bob Kearns, president of the Loma Linda Homeowners Association in Pagosa Springs. He also said some believe it is a symbol of Satan.

. . . . . . . .

Jensen, a past president of the association in the subdivision of 200 homes 270 miles southwest of Denver, said: "I honestly wasn't thinking of the Iraq war. Peace is way bigger than not being at war. This is a spiritual thing. I am not going to take it down until after Christmas. Now that it has come to this I feel I can't get bullied. What if they don't like my Santa Claus."

Kearns said the association will fine Jensen $25 a day for every day it remains up. She calculates that will cost her about $1,000, although she doubts they will be able to make her pay.

Kearns, meanwhile, also said he was concerned about the pagan symbolism of the peace sign. "It's also an anti-Christ sign. That's how it started," he told the Durango Herald.

A quick word about HOAs: we had a conflict with our mentally ill, untreated neighbor about three sets of loud, noisy, clanky windchimes she set up less than 10 feet from our house. It took them more than two months to only send letters. The windchimes are still there. We dropped the matter with the HOA, preferring instead to handle matters ourselves. I wonder if a peace wreath might get mine to act. In other words, I dare them to say anything to me.

4. Thank you
I know that there was a hugh thread a few months ago relating some similar HOA story; quite a few DU'ers in that thread pointed out the positive things they felt their HOA brought to them. Obviously, you are not one of them!

Thanks for that...I tried all morning and just kept getting "fast busy."

And yes, please post their addresses. MFSO is very interested in this matter and would like to get involved as soon as possible.

10. Here are the addresses that I got:
Lisa Jensen
1252 Loma Linda Dr
Pagosa Springs, CO 81147
970.264.0430
(got her answering machine, as I called in support of her)

Robert and Patrica Kearns
855 Saddleback Dr
Pagos Springs, CO 81147
(phone disconnected)

Jeff and Lisa Heitz
719 Saddleback Dr
Pagosa Springs, CO 81147
(phone disconnected)

Thomas and Tammy Spezze
491 Buck Dr
Pagosa Springs, CO 81147

there is no address listed for Judy Estell

should we consider the possibility of a small fund drive--in case the HOA is stupid and arrogant enough to continue with trying to fine Ms Jensen?

11. In moderation...
This is an example of a Neighborhood Association gone out of control. We have an Association that has rules that are pretty lenient. I have heard of some that have some pretty strict (unconstitutional IMHO). This being an example of such.

inside the residents' homes? they are trying to evict the smoking couple. don't know if I can find the link, read it last week, but forget where, exactly.

13. No...
I hadn't heard about that. That would definitely be an example of overreach.

3. So a universally-recognized symbol of peace is anti-Christian?
So whatever happened to that "Prince of Peace" deal? Or doesn't Jesus get into that kind of thing any more?

5. Satan invented semaphore?
The peace symbol is merely the abbreviated letters N and D enclosed within a circle. The image was created for the nuclear disarmament movement and later found wider appeal.

6. Pretty much any type of wreath, Christmas tree, mistletoe, etc
is Pagan in origin. Paganism is a recognized religion is it not? Couldn't these people either demand that all other Paganism derived decorations be taken down, or else claim religious discrimination?

It seems like you could have a real legal heyday with this. I would want to make my HOA and neigbor's lives a living hell if it were me.

8. town of pagosa springs web page
(hmmm, do you suppose they have gotten a call or two on this matter??)

TOWN HAS NO REGULATORY CONTROL OVER HOA
The Loma Linda Subdivision and Home Owner Association is not located in Town limits. Also, municipalities like the town do not regulate home owner associations' covenents, codes and restrictions (CC&R).

THE TOWN WHOLLY SUPPORTS THEIR PEACE SIGN DISPLAY AND ALSO WISHES FOR PEACE ON EARTH.
