I don't believe it! After 11 months, the union hall finally called! |
|
I START TOMORROW!
My Business Manager said that it was because there is renewed confidence in the newly elected Dem Congress and it seems like the election opened the flood gates!
We took a horrific hit with hundreds of cancelled contracts and building plans in 2000 when Bush unexpectedly "won" the election and it's been a rough ride nearly every year since.
It's going to be a good Christmas after all!

I do pharmaceutical contract work--unemployment is gone and I'm down to my last few hundred. But things suddenly heated up right before Thanksgiving.
I did a phone interview this afternoon and should have an answer by morning. But if it doesn't come through, I've got SIX other phone calls I can return!

It looks like I'm not going to get a computer or a phone until next week. Why? Because accoring to the IT department they've been "inundated" with orders to set up computers for new hires! So I guess there really is something to what you say about the Dem victory bringing a wave of economic optimism!

I have followed working trends since I got in the union after getting out of the Navy in 1962 When the Dems. are in power, the working people, in particular the union workers do better. What has always puzzled me is the number of workers who still vote rethug. Just drives me nuts.

16. Wow. Congratulations. I remember those calls from the 'Union Hall' well |
|
My dad was a union electrician, and this thread brought back a lot of memories of how our family's fortunes rose and fell with calls from the union. There is no explaining the euphoria that we felt each time it happened, after sometimes very long waits.
My husband is an Architect. While he is now self-employed, we had a very tough time when he was first starting out. I found it ironic that the architects who designed the building often made less per hour than the workers who built it...and had none of the job security or benefits.

Diane, I hate to correct you, but there is NO job security for construction workers, this explains the euphoria your family felt everytime your dad got a job through the hall. As for the people who do the work getting paid less than the architect, I have trouble buying the fact that your architect husband makes less than $30.00/hr. Also, how many times have you heard of an architect being killed on the job????

I worked as a laborer for a year and that inspired me to go back to college. I am now a licensed architect with my own small firm and am in debt up to my ears, both the business and me personally. True, I am probably not the norm for my profession, but I doubt many tradesmen wake up screaming in the middle of the night worried about their job. I ofttimes wish I had stayed in the trades so I could put my hammer away at 3:30 and not think about work until 7 am. But you are correct, there is no job security and it is dangerous physical labor in all elements. I respect the construction workers greatly and get along better with them than the rich repuke clients I get. We've designed and build apprentice programs for the laborer's, painter's, sheet metal and carpenter's locals as well as the headquarters and meeting hall for the sheet metal workers. I just wish architects had a union.

28. Partially true. But I think you missed my point. |
|
I was just saying that people would be surprised to hear how little the 'worker bee' architects in architectural firms actually make. Or, how few job protections they have.
My husband often worked for about ten dollars an hour. Anything over 40 hours a week was not paid....even when he worked 60,70 or 80 hours a week. I vividly remember times when he worked 14 hour days, 7 days a week, for weeks at a time. With no overtime pay.
Health insurance was available, but not paid by the employer. No paid vacations. No seniority or job security. No pension.
My point was not to say that the trades had it easier...just to note that I was very surprised to learn that my architect husband needed the benefits that a union could provide.

I find your post interesting. In the last couple of weeks I've been getting a lot of phone calls from employment agents. I'm not a union worker (I'm in software) and I'm already employed, so my situation is different from yours, but the calls started in the last couple of weeks and I've been trying to figure out why. I never connected it to the elections but it does make sense.

CONGRATS! Nothing like seeing a hard working american get their asses back into the work force, it's a bitch, especially for a man when the work goes away.. some women don't understand that it's in a man's blood to bring home the bacon, whether the wife is saving OUR bacon or not :)
Good old Reagan (STALIN) made damn sure it was a two person workforce when he got in..
Hope you get a raise!
