WITNESS - Life in the fast lane with Condoleezza Rice

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Tiananmen Square in the morning, Red Square in the afternoon. Washington, Berlin, Paris and Liverpool in the same news cycle.

There's nothing leisurely about being on the road with U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who can take in three countries a day to negotiate on as many issues in as many time zones.

<snip>

On Rice's plane, the press is herded to the back, separated by the bathrooms from Rice's staff and her private cabin.

About a dozen reporters usually travel with her, and Rice knows most by name, sometimes joking over who she did or didn't see in the hotel gym or debating moves in a football game: her dream job is to be head of the National Football League.

Reporters draw lots for seats in the press section, shared with diplomatic security. Number one is a business-class seat and anything over four is coach.

The world is faced with unimaginable horrors, including at least four civil wars (Iraq, Lebanon, Israeli/Palestinian, Oaxaca), genocide in Darfur, a trade imbalance that threatens the collapse of the US economy, James Baker taking over her job de facto, her husb... err, the ostensible POTUS in retreat...and this is the leadership we get from our State Department?

Isn't it about time we ask what our Secretary of State is doing?

Senior Rice aide, Philip Zelikow resigns from post

In his resignation letter to Rice which was made available to Reuters, Zelikow said "family and professional concerns" led to his decision to return to the University of Virginia next year.

Zelikow, who was counselor to Rice and had an office down the hall from the top U.S. diplomat, was involved in many of the major issues facing the United States and also acted as a trouble-shooter for Rice.

He spent months examining U.S. policy toward Iraq and the reconstruction effort, saying in a confidential memorandum after a visit to Iraq that it had the potential to be a "catastrophic failure," according to the recent book "State of Denial" by Washington Post editor Bob Woodward.

2. So our government seems to be circling the globe in airplanes.
Why are they increasingly afraid to be on the ground? It gives a different meaning to the mile high club.
