Never guess who's demanding a list of Concealed Carry Weapons permits?
"This is wild. The gun lobby is declaring victory in New York– because they’ve finally forced authorities there to give up the names of gun permit holders.

The state’s biggest gun group has scored a bull’s-eye with a court victory that requires the NYPD to hand over the names and addresses of 45,000 gun permit holders.

The New York State Rifle and Pistol Association says it will use the list to warn gun owners about Mayor Bloomberg’s campaign to limit their 2nd Amendment right to bear arms.

“I think that many people don’t know how serious the threats are,” said the group’s president, Thomas King. “The mayor is trying to take handguns away from people.”

Of course the Mayor is trying to do no such thing– these gun lobby guys just want to spit their propaganda out, uninvited, to the mailbox of these permitholders.
Gun Lobby Fights for release of the Same Names it claimed to Protect.

But the irony here is even sweeter than that. These are, you might remember, the exact same names that the gun lobby didn’t want revealed to anyone for privacy concerns. They’ve fought tooth and nail in other states to prevent the release of these names to the public, because they claim it’s a violation of gun owners’ privacy to have these names out in the open.

So let’s review: release of gun permit holders’ names to the public is not OK. But release of gun holders’ names to the gun lobby for direct mail purposes: A-OK in their books. In fact, they claim it’s required by law. Give us a break.

The state Rifle and Pistol Association sought the names of the city gun owners in a Freedom of Information Law request with the Police Department in July 2003.

When the NYPD denied having the material in “digital format,” the organization sued in Manhattan Supreme Court."

“First they said they didn’t have it, which was rather patent baloney,” said Patrick Brophy, the gun group’s general counsel.

Loeser said the city denies FOIL requests that seek information containing personal addresses.

“It’s not government’s function to supply direct-mail information,” he added.

The New York Times should submit this exact same FOIL request, and print the name of every permit-holder in the paper. You want to talk “patent baloney”? It’s that the gun lobby thinks no one can be trusted with these names– excepting, of course, them. While they claim to be fighting for gun owners’ privacy rights, they’re more than happy to sell out those same rights, via lawsuit if possible, when they’re trying to spam their mailboxes."

And these gun lobby people aren't neoCONS?

4. Um, that's kind of the point.
The gun lobbyists are making public the names of gun owners.

That's not a good thing.

11. Don't blame you -- but wouldn't they already have your name?
Then again, why make it easier for anyone?

Now I get it.

12. From what I gather,
they had all of the info, but not as a "list".

Now it's in a handy to-go container and anyone can get it.

2. "If you don't want Japan to buy it, don't sell it." - Akio Morita, Sony CEO
If the government didn't want the list to get out, they shouldn't have compiled it. Just wait until the "no-fly list" gets out, too - I guarantee you there will be Hell to pay.

They were forced to do this by court order.

3. Well, they're mostly gonna be OUTside of NYC, that's f'sure...
It's near impossible to get that kind of a license in NYC if you aren't attached to some super-essential-security job. Not in the city...yikes, can you imagine?
Plenty of concealed carriers, but not licensed.

6. Maybe it's me but I bet most of those gun owners
would be happy to hear from the gun lobby and the NRA. This is not a transparent effort to expose who owns guns, the government already knows who all legal gun owners are. It seems the gun lobby needs more people on it's side so they get the list of gun owners and spew their bizarre form of propaganda, scaring them into thinking that now that the Democrats are gaining power their ownership rights are being threatened. Seems like a non-story to me...

13. Why do you think
the govt knows who all legal gun owners are? There are plenty of guns sold person to person with no govt involvment and it is legal.

15. They want to know how many blacks and latinos have guns....
because they know that the shit is going to hit the fan...they are also getting ready for an uprising so that they can plan their strategy . There plans won't work because their are plenty of people who have guns which aren't registered. Everything they plan backfires...I posted last year that these neocons will keep on until there is going to be a war over here...
