New Tool to Avoid CensorBots on The Info Super Highway

Censor avoiders will soon have another option to evade authoritarian firewalls (Yes, that means you, Cisco!) thanks to University of Toronto's Citizen Lab, which will soon release software that creates a sort of distributed virtual private network that users can log into and surf the web without interference from url blacklists or keyword filters, according to stories from the New York Times and the BBC today. The system, known as psiphon, works by letting users in non-censored countries install the software and then users in censored countries can be given the address and a login to use that computer as an encrypted proxy connection. A large set of distributed nodes prevents the wholesale blocking of the network. It's less sophisticated than TOR -- which uses a distributed set of anonymous circuits to throw off snoops and traffic analyzers, but Citizen Lab developers say it will be easier to use than TOR and less susceptible to blocking than other anonymizing proxy services.
