One person was injured this morning when a sport utility vehicle crashed into a school bus on the Near Southside.

No children were on the Indianapolis Public Schools bus when it collided with the SUV at Terrace Avenue and Madison Avenue, north of Manual High School, at 10:19 a.m., according to Marion County police dispatch.
Police closed Madison Avenue near Pleasant Run Parkway North Drive while firefighters worked to extricate the driver of the SUV out of the vehicle, dispatch said.

The victim was awake and transported to an area hospital, dispatch said. The victim’s name and condition were not immediately available.

Mary Louise Bewley, spokeswoman for IPS, said the bus had dropped off students at Manual shortly before the accident. The driver did not have any serious injuries, Bewley said.

2. People Driving Hummers for Recreation are as Vain as ...
one can get. What an idiotic statement to make driving a gas guzzler that was meant for off-roading.

Maybe it's just small penises and little brains or overinflated egos?

Never seen one Hummer... but I've seen plenty of "dirt road" capable Honda Civics! :-)

22. They are the epitome of waste and inefficiency
the conditions under which you would fully utilize them are so rare as to be laughable.

A person who misses the mark by such a large margin should not be congratulated but condemned.
Thrift, shrewdness and intelligence are laudable attributes not vanity and overconsumption.

The worst civic driver in the world is better than the best hummer driver.

17. Actually it was the Hum-Vee that was built for off-road use. The Hummer
is just a Chevy Yukon with an extra 550 lbs. and a very ugly body, so the consumer sheep think they have a "military truck".

BTW, when you could still buy them, the Hum-Vee sold for ~$120,000 (Ahnuld has two or three) compared to the ~$70,000 BJ.

4. Clearly the Hummer ass-ended the bus without braking.
Edited on Tue Nov-28-06 01:48 PM by Buzz Clik
Smart money says the SUV driver had a cellphone jammed in their ear.

I live an hour north of Indy. Last year, we had a similar accident with a loaded bus. Three little girls had to be extracted from the bus. One didn't return to school for months and is still in physical therapy for her legs.

6. Damn!
Even the crash test dummies wouldn't have survived that crash.
And the school bus looks like it's in relatively good shape. Weird.

It's shaped to look "tough," but it's total dreck.

20. Mass wins.
And the school bus looks like it's in relatively good shape. Weird.

In a vehicle accident, mass almost always wins. And next time you're close to a school bus, look under the back and see how substantial those frame rails are. A typical school bus is built like a large over-the-road truck (which, essentially, it is).

11. Correct me if I'm wrong
but it looks like that school bus didn't get a dent!

Meanwhile, now we know that black penis extender is not only heavy, inefficient and ugly, we now know it's flimsy.

It'll be interesting to find out just how fast that driver was going!

Kind of stretches the meaning of "victim" a bit.

29. Looking at the photo,
I see no skid marks. If the bus was stopped, it looks to me like no matter how fast the driver was going, he did not hit the breaks and slammed right into the back of the bus.

21. If it weren't for the destruction, possible injury or death
I would love to see a Hummer take on, oh, say, a 1950 Chevy 3/4 ton truck. Or for that matter, any other American iron vehicle from that era. My bet is that the Hummer would lose.

25. People feel invincible when driving them. That is the problem. It is kind of like the problem of
4-wheel drive trucks in an ice storm. The drivers don't seem to realize that even though 4-wheel drive may help the vehicle GO, it doesn't do squat to help it STOP. In fact, because a 4-wheel vehicle is usually heavier, it needs more stopping distance than a comparable 2-wheel model.

26. Hummers and snow/ice
A couple of years ago, my wife picked me up at the airport in our '97 Supra (rather low-slung, to say the least, and certainly overpowered for the snow). There was a blizzard going on. So I carefully and SLOWLY drove us home. On the way, off the side of the interstate, we saw TWO Hummers and one Ford Excursion (the BIG one) that had slid off the road and were hopelessly mired and abandoned until spring!

We made it home just fine. And quite amused!

27. I think that's part of it's sales pitch -
"If I'm in a wreck, I want the other guy to die." Sick as that is.

Looks like that myth is busted.

33. Screw SUV's, I want a BUS
I have always wanted to convert a school bus into an RV and this only fuels the fire. I will be sending the pic to friends and family who think that I'm nuts for wanting to buy a bluebird.
Does this mean that soccer moms will start buying buses? How long before Lexus starts making the new BY (big yellow) series.
woo hoo
