While Iraq burns, we shop
Article Last Updated:11/28/2006 08:10:51 AM PST

THE competing television news images on the morning after Thanksgiving were of the unspeakable carnage in Sadr City in Baghdad — where more than 200 Iraqi civilians were killed by a series of coordinated car bombs — and the long lines of cars filled with holiday shopping zealots that jammed the highway approaches to American malls that had opened for business at midnight.

A Wal-Mart in Union, N.J., was besieged by customers even before it opened its doors at 5 a.m. on Friday. "All I can tell you," said a Wal-Mart employee, "is that they were fired up and ready to spend money."

There is something terribly wrong with this juxtaposition of gleeful Americans with fistfuls of dollars storming the department store barricades and the slaughter by the thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians, including old people, children and babies. The war was started by the United States, but most Americans feel absolutely no sense of personal responsibility for it.

1. Not for long. The economy is going belly up.
Spend big in Iraq, get big debt, debt bites back. What goes around comes around.

2. This must be how God wants it.
Otherwise, He wouldn't have annnointed Smirk to be President at this crucial time.

Unless...unless... (gasp) unless... Bush was mistaken and he really ISN'T God's chosen one.

In which case, what the hell do we do now?

3. I said the very same things to my sister last Friday on the phone. I bet there would
be a greater sense of responsibility if there were a draft. The thing that is wrong with this country is a total lack of empathy exhibited by Americans. We haven't any, nor conscience, nor soul. The more the population swings to the nutty, 'Christian' right, the less we have. We're taught to think we are better than any other population on earth. We're more powerful. We have more killing weapons. We know more than anybody else. And, we mustn't forget, that 'this country was founded as a Christian country' so we are soooooo much more moral.

I call Bullshit. We're more self-centered, self-righteous, and greedy for material possessions than any other population. But we have no empathy or sense of responsibility.
