So he's a fascist AND a nut (not that those are mutually exclusive of course).

Gingrich raises alarm at event honoring those who stand up for freedom of speech

MANCHESTER – Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich yesterday said the country will be forced to reexamine freedom of speech to meet the threat of terrorism.

Newt Gingrich

Gingrich, speaking at a Manchester awards banquet, said a "different set of rules" may be needed to reduce terrorists' ability to use the Internet and free speech to recruit and get out their message.

"We need to get ahead of the curve before we actually lose a city, which I think could happen in the next decade," said Gingrich, a Republican who helped engineer the GOP's takeover of Congress in 1994.

Gingrich spoke to about 400 state and local power brokers last night at the annual Nackey S. Loeb First Amendment award dinner, which fetes people and organizations that stand up for freedom of speech.

Gingrich sharply criticized campaign finance laws he charged were reducing free speech and doing little to fight attack advertising. He also said court rulings over separation of church and state have hurt citizens' ability to express themselves and their faith.

4. Giving aid and comfort to the enemy, at a bare minimum.
Essentially telling them they could accomplish it easily. Ann Coulter thinks liberals should be executed for less.

before...

he doesn't seem overly concerned that we already lost a city (N.O.).

They need some new material for their fear games. This stuff is really getting old. Crying wolf all the time is so dangerous. How many of us are going to believe them when there is a real threat at this point?

7. Yeah, that's right. Ignore the root causes of terroristm
Why deal with poverty and starvation and an arrogent US foreign policy that does not care how free or repressive a government is as long as they'll sell oil?

And I find it totally facinating that the lobbyists and other monied people don't have ENOUGH free speech, while people like, um, the rest of the country have far too much.

And the freedom of worship has not hurt anybody's ability to express themselves and their faith. It had just kept fanatics from using the government apparatus from hammering it into everybody's skull.

15. agree 100%
This is what is so frustrating to me. We have all this talk about tactics, strategy, ect. but no one wants to talk about the fundamental causes of the problem, much less do anything about it.

to push for the abridgement of the freedom of speech at a banquet that is celebrating the exercise of free speech.

12. Damn straight, look at what happened to New Orleans already.
If we don't get serious about fighting a global war on climate change soon, we may lose more than one city. It is high time we do something about the threat facing our country....Ooops wrong topic....

And where were you when the people of New Orleans were begging for water and food?

There isn't a terrorist on this earth who can compete with a hurricane. Or the ruinous, murderous BushCo.

(am i the only one who is reminded of Bush and Condi's mushroom cloud statements?)

We've had so much fear mongering in order to curtail civil rights already, it think people are on to this trick.

And instead of losing a city, it will lose a Gingrich.

That's the photo of a man who's deteriorating rapidly.

Edited on Tue Nov-28-06 06:21 PM by kineta
Freedom of communication is a HUGE threat to them. Communication between individuals, rather than filtered through controlled mass media is a huge threat to them. The inability to control what is reported, what becomes big news stories and what stays repressed must drive them batshit crazy. They lost the election in large part due to 'net-roots'. They have no better ideas than to try and destroy free speech. They're freaking dinosaurs. Hopefully near extinction...
