Family in Need of Help
OK, here’s the situation.

I know a women named Kristi Bowman through a small anti-child abuse forum. She joined after her 5 year old son was beaten by his kindergarten teacher for "disciplinary" reasons (see news story at bottom.) Kristi has since been campaigning in the news media, and in her community, to eliminate “corporal punishment” (child-beating) in Tennessee schools in order to protect all children, not just her own. Anyone who advocates for children’s rights is an exceptional person in my book.

Recently, the Bowman family has had more bad luck.

After having Topaz surgery for a foot ailment, Kristi has developed a vascular problem with her leg. Her doctors are now telling her they may have to amputate if her condition continues to worsen. To make matters worse, she recently suffered a mild stroke after her surgery, and when her husband took a day off from work to care for her, he was fired (That would never happen in Europe.)

Long story short, they're now being buried under an avalanche of bills, and are afraid they won't be able to make any kind of Christmas for their two little ones.

If anyone would like to make a donation to help the Bowman family, here is the info:

Make any checks payable to Kristy Bowman, and send to:

Kristy Bowman
176 Taylor Hills Rd. Apt .1

Below is Kristi's story in the local paper if anyone would like to read it:

'Dayton's Kristy Bowman was upset when her son was paddled at Dayton
City School last month, so she held a rally against corporal
punishment Saturday…and nobody came.

"Kids aren't slaves; they don't need to be hit," Bowman said
Saturday. "It's a form of child abuse. I don't care if it's in the
school or in a home or in church; it's a form of child abuse."

Bowman's 5-year-old son, Jacob, a kindergarten student at DCS,
received a paddling on Sept. 22, in accordance with school policy,
for shooting corn through a straw in the cafeteria after being warned
not to.

Bowman insists that when she enrolled her son at DCS this summer she
wasn't told about the school's policy on corporal punishment and
insists she never received any written notification. According to the
school's policy, parents must notify the school in writing if they do
not want their child to be paddled.

She said her son told her about the paddling when she picked him up
from school that day and she found a quarter-sized bruise on his
buttocks that evening.

"I'm just outrageous that any parent would allow corporal punishment
to be done on their kids at school," Bowman said. "It's sickening
that anyone is able to hit another person's kid."

Bowman said she has contacted several anti-paddling groups across the
country. She also said she contacted Congressman Zach Wamp and that
he had agreed to introduce legislation to ban corporal punishment,
but Wamp's Washington office said the congressman has no plans to
introduce any such legislation.

Bowman said her son now has nightmares and doesn't like school. She
said he is also now afraid of straws. She said she plans to take him
to a child psychiatrist.

Bowman planned a rally against corporal punishment for Saturday.'

3. It's a real problem.
I've seen much worse. We had a kid with a broken back from a paddling in TX in 2003. I've seen kids horribly bruised. One principal was paddling kids for having their shirt untucked at ball games on the week-end.

Teen girls are routinely sexually exploited with "spankings" by male school staff for tiny infractions such as tardies. Some of this is legally video recorded. It's going on mainly in the midwest and South.

This needs to stop.

And no pay-pal that I know of. I'll ask. I don't know how to go about setting up a special acount, or if thats the route we should go.

4. Poor parenting
I have a lot of kids, we moved frequently (military) and I ALWAYS checked to see if corporal punishment was allowed in the schools they attended. In a state like Tennessee, I would have expected it.

9. You can opt out. This story is fishy
Acceptable behavior is essential to an effective school program. Parents are encouraged to cooperate with and support Dayton City School in establishing and maintaining discipline and order within our school. Methods of maintaining discipline and order in the classroom will be left up to the principal, assistant principal, and teachers. Specific discipline procedures are designed to protect all members of the educational community in the exercise of the rights and duties. These discipline procedures are posted outside of the office and in the guidance office to be viewed by parents, guardians, and students. Methods of discipline may include the use of corporal punishment. “Any teacher or school principal may use corporal punishment in a reasonable manner against any pupil for good cause in order to maintain discipline and order within the public school.” (T.C.A. 49-6-4103) All corporal punishment is administered in the presence of the principal/assistant principal.

Any parent that prefers corporal punishment not be used with his/her child should inform both the school office and the classroom teacher of his/her request. THIS MUST BE DONE IN WRITING WITH THE DATE AND SIGNATURE OF THE PARENT OR GUARDIAN. All such requests will be honored and must be updated each new school year.

5. Husband Is Allowed a Day Off Under FMLA
Edited on Tue Nov-28-06 05:42 PM by REP
He needs to be pursuing legal options for this.

Any other documentation for this story? Not about her not being aware of the policies at the school where she sent her child, but why the family needs money sent to their apartment (instead of a bank, as most fund raisers are done) and why the husband was fired for what is a covered FMLA absence?

7. I'll point that out to them and
We have our suspicions that her husband might have been retaliated against (but that is specualation) for their vocal opposition to school child beatings - er uh.. I'm sorry, I meant corporal punishment

That happened to the Ghasperson family back in the 80's. Shelly gave Senate testimony after being horribly bruised by a paddling in high school in Dunne North Caralina.

As far as the handling of donations, we don't know how to go about this. Should we set up a pay-pal account or what?

I will also tell her of the FMLA thing.

10. NJ outlawed paddling in 1867
and it took decades for other states to follow suit. Having grown up in New Jersey, I was appalled to learn, when we moved to Maryland in 1990, that it was still allowed here. Maryland finally banned it in 1993. I am so proud of my home state of NJ for being so far ahead of the rest of the country in banning this insane practice. And let me tell you, when I went to school there, kids behaved!

Here is a useful website showing how various states stand on the issue:

Also:

Paddling should be banned in all schools
Anonymous writes "Dear editor,

Friday afternoon my husband and I picked our 5-year-old son up from school. While asking him how did his day went, our son mentioned that he had been paddled while at school. We as parents do not believe in corporal punishment should not be allowed in our school systems anywhere.

Now our 5-year-old son is afraid to go back to a school on Monday. He told his father and I that he didn't want to go back on Monday. We as parents needs to stand up for our children when comes to this matter. No child ,with or without a disability, should be sent to school to be harmed. No one should be hitting our children anywhere, no matter where it is at, whether it's at school, church,or being babysat in our homes, anywhere period. If schools can call DHS on us parents, why can't we on them? If we, as parents can go to jail or lose our children over corporal punishment in our homes, then it should be the same in our school systems.

What gives antone the right to paddle our children without our consent? We ,as parents shouldn't have to write a note stating not to paddle our children while they are at school. If we, as parents can put our neighbor or someone we know in jail for harming our children? Why can't we do the same for the school systems? Corporal punishment shouldn't be in our school systems. No one has the right to corporal punishment our children with any object. Corporal punishment is a form of child abuse no matter who is doing it.

Children need us parents to fight and stand up for them, cause they can't do this alone. As parents we are to protect our children from harm's way. Corporal punishment should be taken out of our schools now. No one should be able to hurt our children anywhere. Our school systems should not allow corporal punishment to be in our schools. We as parents are against corporal punishment.

14. Call my cynical.
She holds a rally in her town related to "child-beating" (as OP calls it). Not one member of the community shows up. There is not one quote was apparently sought from the school district or any other 'authority', only what Bowman claims.

OP claims the father/husband was fired for taking one day off work.
Any pursuit of comment from employer? Nope. There is NOT ONE SOURCE in the article, but Bowman herself (Well, except her congressman who contradicted her claims she attributed to him).

What does corporal punishment have to do with this solicitation for donation checks? None.

There are plenty of families in need in my own town and every other town. Why an internet solicitation to send money to this family? This has all of the earmarks of an internet scam.

While corporal punishment is a legitimate issue, and her family hardships may or may not be real, her solicitations for cash and gifts on the internet smells. I will keep my giving to local families and known organizations, not an internet stranger.

She does not solicit donations to any child protection organization, but to herself. This does not belong on DU.
