View of the new Democratic Majority from Iraq

To all the Democrats out there mouthing the "gradual drawdown" or the "we broke it, we fix" line: STOP THAT SHIT NOW!!! Despite the ideological differences within the ranks, the Democratic victory this month translated one way: the war is coming to end. This mindset will be nearly impossible to get out of and can prove dangerous to troops on the ground.
.......................
By mid-afternoon on the 8th of November, it became clear to us over here that the Democrats had been elected to the majority in both Houses. (Despite what George Allen or Conrad Burns might have thought!!) The buzz around the mess hall was palatable: this thing will be over in a few months. Those of us who had been here a while had to reconcile with the fact that it probably would not cut our deployment short, but at least the guys who just got here might get out in six months or so. The sweeping overturn was seen as a complete repudiation of the Iraq conflict by the American people.
..............
All this being said, what does it mean on the ground? First of all, we know that it is sooner rather than later that we come home. Secondly, it is clear that the American people have realized what was so painfully apparent to us for years: there is no military solution here. Operating with this mindset means that commanders and leaders are focused on keeping troops alive rather than on conducting missions. No one can blame them for this course of action. It is the obvious answer to the famous John Kerry question,"How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?" The answer is you don't. The major side effect of risk adversion by commanders is that the enemy becomes emboldened by the lack of response. They are now willing to take risks that would have resulted in certain death before, but now achieve a major public relations victory without taking casualties.
An Army can not fight a war with one eye on the enemy and another eye looking for redeployment orders.
The Democratic Party has been given a historic opportunity to once again correct the excesses of the Republican Party. Stop the quisling talk of gradualism and "he's stil the commander in chief." When the next appropriations bill comes along, refuse to fund any more conflict and dole out monies only to be used for the immediate redeployment of American forces from Iraq. We have done the job. We achieved military victory. Reward us by letting us come home. read the rest at:
