There are a couple of posts about another web community's discussion of a "second civil war" here in North America.

What do you refer to the events of the early 1860's as?

2. "War between the States" is grammatically incorrect.

The use of the preposition "between" suggests only two states were involved. If one wants to use this appellation, it should be "The War among the States."

3. That, however, seems to imply

That everyone was fighting everyone else. Pennsylvania vs. New York vs Ohio vs Kentucky vs Indiana vs Louisiana vs et al.

and everybody vs Alabama. :)

8. not in this case. "the states" are two separate entities, as in, Northern and Southern

so, the war between the (southern and northern) states.

Two sides, therefore between is correct. As another poster said, "war among the states" would seem to imply that states were just fighting each other haphazzardly, and not in an organized, two "state" conflict.
