First the Passion, now the Nativity

Hollywood puts the Christ back in Christmas, with a now-pregnant teen as the Virgin Mary

BRIAN D. JOHNSON

It was inevitable. After The Passion of the Christ proved that a vast Christian audience would pay to see a devotional movie about Jesus, someone would whisper that magic word into the ear of a Hollywood executive: prequel.

Promising to put the Christ back in Christmas, and some cash in studio coffers, The Nativity Story lacks the drama, and the violence, of Mel Gibson's blood-drenched epic. After all, it's a happier tale. But under the unlikely direction of Catherine Hardwicke -- best known for thirteen, a harrowing tale of teenage sex, drugs and delinquency -- The Nativity Story attempts to bring some grown-up realism to a saga of grade-school pageants.

And it even offers a frisson of potential controversy. Keisha Castle-Hughes, the 16-year-old Maori actress who plays the Virgin Mary, is pregnant.

Castle-Hughes is a clearly precocious talent. Starring in Whale Rider at 12, she became the youngest person ever nominated for a best actress Oscar. But this instance of life imitating art is not a miracle of method acting. Castle-Hughes' baby has a father -- her 19-year-old high-school sweetheart, New Zealand's Bradley Hull.

And she's due to give birth next spring, which means her un-immaculate conception probably occurred shortly after the end of shooting, which ranged from Italy to Morocco. Still, the notion of a pregnant teen representing the Virgin Mary does seem a bit racy, especially considering that the Pope has given the picture his blessing.

On Sunday, The Nativity Story will become the first movie ever to receive its world premiere at the Vatican. And its teenage star will not attend, for undisclosed reasons.
