Did Bush know the whole story about Webb's son and friends?
Edited on Wed Nov-29-06 10:40 PM by madfloridian
If so what he said was inexcusable. Webb really did well NOT to slug him.

http://www.firedoglake.com/2006/11/29/so-hows-the-wife-and-kids/

"As President Bush is well aware, a couple of weeks before this dinner the tank riding next to Jimmy's in Iraq was under fire and three marines died.

My sources are telling me that the way President Bush approached Webb with his tone, it appeared he was asking the question of how Jimmy was doing in a mocking manner, while he was certainly aware of the tragedy that had hit his unit a few weeks earlier."

Webb really endeared himself to me about this. How dare our so-called president talk to anyone like this, much less a man whose son had friends killed there in Iraq.

2. What a sick, sick man.
That's just sick, taunting the father of a solider in wartime. Sick.

3. He neither knows nor cares
which is why he got so snotty when the answer to his bread and butter type question wasn't "Good." At that point, he wouldn't have had to interact with the Democrat (Webb) any more and could go back to his important (GOP) guests.

By the GOP and rich man's way of thinking, what Webb said was unforgivable. One simply doesn't DO that at such an occasion, what was he thinking?

9. Oh, I'm sure we'll hear about it
Hannity, Rush, O'Lielly all will do their parts to point out this encounter, ESPECIALLY the "slugging" part.

25. I doubt they'll play up Webb's fury.
Right-wing talking heads don't want to help boost the popularity of Democrats. And in today's climate, I bet a member of Congress who wants to slap Dubya would skyrocket in the polls.

4. Does anyone know?
Does anyone know what division his son is with? My great nephew is in Iraq, he is a Navy Corpsman with a Marine division. When we took my Nephew back to camp to leave for Iraq, Jim Webb was there taking his son back. I did not see him but seen on the news that he was there. My Nephew had friends killed a few weeks ago and he is so distraught. I am just so sick and upset all the time with worry and sadness. My nephew is so softhearted, he just wanted to get into the medical field. He is from a small town, father left and he could never find him & Mom just working all the time. He saw the military as a way to help people by being a Corpsman, school was out of the question. I am just so sad for everyone.

My son was also very softhearted.

My heart goes out to your nephew.

Peace.

Of course, I might be prejudiced because my son is a Force Recon Corpsman. :patriot:

If I had a son in that hellhole go through that and that smug prick said that to me, the next thing he'd be doing would be picking his teeth up off the floor. What a fucking gobshite.

I expect better from the POTUS but I know * hasn't lived up to even the most rudimentary POTUS-like behavior.

The first thing Congress needs to do is pass a no pardon law.

26. I'll be the first to say it -- Jim Webb for president
Here's why, from the blog:

<<The Washington Post, however, is quick to quote those on the Hill who conclude from this outburst that Webb is not made of The Right Senatorial Stuff ("I think he's going to be a total pain").<<

<<"He's not a typical politician. He really has deep convictions," said Schumer, who headed the Senate Democrats' campaign arm.<<

I say, GOOD! to both. It's about damned time we saw a politician like this.

I have always had respect for Webb, given his military service as well as his family's, which goes back to the Revolution. That's a HELL of a lot more than can be said for Bush.

Thanks for posting the backstory on this, and you're right -- Webb showed A LOT of grace in that situation.

29. George Will 'edited' the exchange for partisan purposes .....
There is nothing caring about Bush, and I don't believe Bush had any real concern about Webb's son --he was just trying to make sure he could say he greeted all of the new members of Congress knowing that Webb was avoiding contact with him.

Once again it was all about Bush and his agenda, and had nothing to do with the needs and concerns of those who are sacrificing this lives for a failed adventure in Iraq.

It would have been political suicide for Webb, but I'd watch it over and over and over and over again for the rest of my life. :D

32. Let's Mass E-mail Chris Wallace of Faux News
so that the next time he sees the pretzledent he can ask him; "I've got a lot of e-mails from people and they wanted me to ask you; 'Did you know about the attack that killed three Marines in the tank next to Jim Webb's son a week ago?' when you asked him how his boy was doing?"

I'm sure in the interest of being "fair and ballanced" he'll get right on that.

33. According to Kos diary, Bush did know about Webb's son.
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/12/3/202133/415

"Well, tonight I attended a party honoring volunteers in the Hunter Mill District of Fairfax County, VA who had helped - in a very big way - to bring about Webb's upset victory and thus garner control of the Senate. I had the opportunity to chat with Congressman Jim Moran (D-Va 8th district) in private before he publicly addressed the group. I recounted how proud I was of Webb's actions in front of Bush, and recounted the speculation on whether Bush could possibly have known about the incident with Webb's son. He said, without hesitation:

"Not only did Bush know about it, he was specifically briefed on the incident before meeting with Webb, and was cautioned to be extra sensitive in speaking with Webb about his son."
