Japan: We Have A Right To Nuclear Weapons
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061130/ap_on_re_as/japan_nuclear_weapons

OKYO - Japan has the technological know-how to produce a nuclear weapon but has no immediate plans to do so, the foreign minister said Thursday, several weeks after communist
North Korea carried out a nuclear test.

Foreign Minister Taro Aso, who has called for discussion of Japan's non-nuclear policy, also asserted that the pacifist constitution does not forbid possession of the bomb.

"Japan is capable of producing nuclear weapons," Aso told a parliamentary committee on security issues. "But we are not saying we have plans to possess nuclear weapons."

Japan, the only country ever attacked by atomic weapons, has for decades espoused a strict policy of not possessing, developing or allowing the introduction of nuclear bombs on its territory.

1. The title sounds like something we may hear from the NRA soon.

4. And the argument is the same...
The potential change in their non-nuclear stance is a direct result of N. Korea and Japan's rising fears driving the perception that nukes will serve as a protection for them.

2. Good
Personally I think every nation should have nukes, just to feel safer.

5. Stop the world, I want to get off.
Seriously. If Japan is now thinking of going nuclear, that means that for the first time since WWII they don't trust we can take care of them (and Bush** has certainly given them no reason to think otherwise). That's not only a DISMAL reflection on US foreign policy, but when the Japanese are prepared to change their Constitution to arm themselves we have a clear indication of which way things are going in this world thanks to the neocons.

Let me off. Please.

7. Kind of misleading title, since one government minister was saying that
The country as a whole is not particularly enthusiastic about possessing nuclear weapons.
