Camps to be shut are 'unsuitable' for living (Dubai, UAE)
Edited on Wed Nov-29-06 11:25 PM by JCMach1
Dubai: More than 100 labour accommodations in Muhaisna 2 area, are to be shut down within a year because they are unsuitable for living in.

Salem Mesmar, Public Health Director and head of the recently established Committee for Environmental and Health Affairs of Labourers at Dubai Municipality, told Gulf News that this is the first step towards improving the living conditions of workers.

Dr Ali Bin Abdullah Al Ka'abi, Minister of Labour, welcomed the move and said labour accommodations must be organised. He said the municipality's move is a step in the right direction... http://gulfnews.com/nation/Employment/10086177.html

DUBAI HAS RESPONDED QUICKLY TO RECENT MEDIA SCRUTINY AND ONGOING LABOR UNREST HERE IN THE SANDLANDS. THE NEXT STEP WILL BE A NEW LABOR LAW COMING IN DEC., OR JAN. WHICH WILL GIVE WORKERS THE RIGHT TO ORGANIZE UNIONS. THINGS CHANGE AT LIGHTNING SPEED HERE. THE UAE STILL HAS GROWING PAINS FROM TIME TO TIME... WE ARE CELEBRATING NATIONAL DAY, THE 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE THIS WEEKEND. ALSO, THE FIRST DEMOCRATIC ELECTIONS FOR NATIONAL COUNCIL ARE TAKING PLACE IN DECEMBER... :)

ON EDIT:

MAN, LET A 20/20 CREW AND ALL HELL BREAKS LOSE... HERE ANOTHER RELATED STORY AS WELL:

Delayed wages to attract MoL action

ABU DHABI — The Ministry of Labour (MoL) has stressed that the companies which delayed wages of their employees and which have expired labour cards would face penalties such as code suspension at the MoL’s system for one year in addition to imposition of fines... http://khaleejtimes.com/DisplayArticle.asp?xfile=data/theuae/2006/November/theuae_November819.xml§ion=theuae

1. WOOHOO!!!!!
Way to go!

I must say, though the people at the top had relations with suspect characters, I personally knew people who were average citizens.

I'm glad that y'all are making such progress!

2. So they're uh, unfit to live in, so we'll close them within ONE YEAR?
Just mentioning what that sounds like.
