Religious Right Releases Violent Video Game, Just in Time For Christmas

Our friends over at Talk2Action.org have been tracking the newest member of Tim LaHaye’s “Left Behind” family; the video game version of the story a.k.a. “Left Behind: Eternal Forces.”

For those who are unfamiliar with the Left Behind stories entirely, check out DefCon’s feature on LaHaye and end-times theology. As for the game, here’s a snippet from Michelle Goldberg’s article on the game for New York Magazine:

There are hundreds of ordinary New Yorkers in the game, and you can click on any of them to read a short bio detailing their life and faith. In the course of play, they all have to take sides. As the game’s Website says, “their choice is to either join the AntiChrist—which is an imposturous one world government seeking peace for all of mankind, or they may join the Tribulation Force—which seeks to expose the truth and defend themselves against the forces of the AntiChrist.” Gamers can themselves join the forces of darkness. When I played the evil side while visiting Left Behind Games’ bland, office-park headquarters outside of San Diego recently, I started with two soldiers in my Satanic army, one of them a Muslim named Amir Mohammed Salem.

If you really want to understand the ins and outs, see this collection of posts on Talk2Action regarding the game.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&domains=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.talk2action.org%2F&q=%22Eternal+Forces%22&sitesearch=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.talk2action.org%2F

In usual hypocritical fashion, the religious right leadership — many of whom have been vocal opponents of violent video games in the past — have been silent when it comes to the violent “Eternal Forces.” Apparently simulated slaughter is ok if it promotes your ideology.

1. I wish I had written this response
(From the talk2action link)

"I've said it before and I'll say it again; the Christian right is nothing but a hate group like the KKK. indeed, there's a great deal of overlap between the two. However, unlike other hate groups, the Christian right has been politically successful because they usually manage to disguise their hatred as something else. So successful in fact, that people who aught to know better, often accuse me of being excessive when I refer to the Christian right in this way. Let's be clear about this. This is not a group that wants to stop abortion or gay marriage. It's a group whose goal is nothing less than the conversion or elimination of all non-Christians and all Christians who don't agree with their interpretation of Christianity. They are almost always dishonest about this. This game seems to be a rare example of truthfulness from the Christian right, and they should be commended for it. I'd like to think of it as a positive first step. More likely though, it's a rare slip up. I don't think these folks want to reveal their true intentions until they feel they have sufficient power to start carrying them out."

i agree with what is written. after 6 years of watching the hate cultivate and grow i have come to the conclusion the republicans could not have done what they did without this group of people to pread the hate and fear across the nation. hate in the name of the lord. hate dictated from the bible. christianity has become a cult by these people. for years i tried to hold onto my piece of christianity, but a couple of weeks ago after being around a couple fundamentalist friends and dealing with the private christian school of the past, again, i concluded i dont want the christianity because for this moment they own it. i want no part of it. whether you are christian or not matters ot to me, but i am, and to lose my religion is significant to me. my son asked confused what about god. god and jesus never leaves, they are not a religion. but the religion i have let go

10. I understand, seabeyond.
 I've seen 'good people' turned into repulsive hate-mongers by their church.
It's coming from the top down. It taps into ugly, and then fertilizes it.
What scares me is wondering how far they will go with their hatred.
