theatre downtown and when hubby went to rent/purchase it there were no copies available. Not that we won't continue to try to find it, but that's the way it all shook out for us.

134. Nah, it was back in October. I'm still recovering.
There was a lot I couldn't watch for awhile, Colbert for one. I had to get my right kidney out because of a big tumor (that was benign, thank God), so I have a 10" long incision just under my ribs. Oh, and they had to cut off the end of one of my ribs to get it all out, so that hurt, too. I watched Colbert one night after the surgery and had to turn it off--hurt too dang much.

115. That's disappointing
We rented it last night from our local Blockbuster. I was curious how it would be promoted/displayed since it is considered by many to be a political movie. They had an entire shelf, from floor to ceiling, dedicated to it's display. I was delighted to see that not only did they appear to have about 50 copies of the movie, but that there were only about 3 left on the shelf.

South Florida is completely insane, but we are definitely Liberal. It could be worse :)

Then saw it again at the LA Film Festival with Al and Tipper there to introduce it.

I already am quite familiar with climate change, I doubt the movie is going to provide me with any new information that I can't find elsewhere, so why bother? What's more, I find it disturbing that somebody is trying to lay a guilt trip on me because I haven't watched a stupid movie.

79. sorry, not to you. Being too cryptic
Thinking the quotes would show I was quoting the OP in #43 saying that. And the general responses of OP has been that we should. I hate "should" and asking who hasn't, saying "Why not? I hope I get no damn response to this thread!" then responding "whatthefuckever" to a poster saying wasn't going to. I am glad that people are watching this movie, but feel bad at being told I "should".

It seemed a kinda tongue in cheek and friendly question about a serious topic.

I am not sure what is seen as serious outrage or guilt tripping here, but even of I did feel "guilt tripped" that wouldn't make me decide not to watch the movie out of spite -no connecton between the OP and the movie .

As far as what it can inspire one to do, there are a lot issues I am aware of overall, but I find that watching a documentary about them typically reenergizes me :).

It's personal preference. It's a science documentary, but Al Gore's not a scientist. Nothing wrong with that, I'm just not his target audience. Now, if Jared Diamond was to do a documentary, I might be interested, but a policy wonk? No thanks.

54. I am curious as to why?
Edited on Sun Dec-03-06 09:18 PM by uppityperson
I haven't, would like to at some point but been busy doing other things and I feel rather "preaching to the choir" with me.

Edited to add, I am asking to see why, not to say bad things towards you, but wondering why politely. Thanks

109. Straight answer
I just don't see why I should watch something that isn't going to provide me with any new insight. Given the fact that Al Gore is a politician and not a scientist makes me even less interested. Documentaries have to be about subjects I know little about, otherwise I'm just not interested. And somebody telling me that I absolutely MUST watch it convinces me that I'm not missing much.

Conflating my personal preferences for choosing which movies I want to see and which I don't as a personal insult to those who use a different criteria is ridiculous. Do you get offended when someone tells you they don't like your favorite band?

84. Have Not Seen It
But I am up to speed at a layman's level on climate change.

What we need now is a lot less of this:

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/15626530/

Rep. John Dingell, who has been a U.S. lawmaker since 1955, also gave a strong indication of what he did not plan to do: raise fuel-efficiency standards for U.S. automobiles.

And a lot more of this:

http://www.upi.com/Energy/view.php?StoryID=20061201-035549-3766r

Reid said Congress needs to invest away from fossil fuels and more in solar and wind power, geothermal (generating power from the natural heat deep in the Earth) and biomass (converting plant matter to fuels). "We can't do it overnight but I think we have to set goals. How about something as simple as reducing the importation of oil by a million barrels a year," Reid said.

"If we could only import 20 million barrels then we could do a number of things. What I hope that we would do is move to alternative energy. Give tax credits over a long period of time, not a year or two, so people could invest in alternative energy. We could certainly do more with conservation that we're not doing."

. . .

Reid says this is a great starting point for reducing U.S. consumption and increasing energy efficiency, and favors raising the bar for fuel economy standards, which the industry is against.

Note that from the context, it is clear he was talking about a 1 M bbl/dy reduction in demand each year, which is significant.

127. I don't think we're screwed, and I'll be surprised if the more extreme scenarios
actually come to pass. My gut feeling is that most Americans will probably not notice many direct climate-related issues at all (climate change will be lost in weather-noise), and adjustments in the U.S. will be relatively easy. By the same token, I think there will be significant impacts on populations in marginal areas outside the U.S., and it's probably too late to avoid them.

It seems to me that the more significant long-term dangers are in areas of water supply, soil degradation, overfishing, habitat loss, and overpopulation in LDCs. Climate change may exacerbate some of these, but in the absence of other forces the climate impact would be manageable...

Seeing any movie has been low on our priority list... Hubby has serious health issues (dialysis, etc.) so we have been focusing on our own reality. Hubby has not been well enough to go to a movie theater. I am in therapy now to help with coping.

If I get time after the holiday music performances, I will see if we can rent it. Don't have any credit cards, so can't do NetFlicks. Will see if anyone here in the boonies has it for rent.

Not great excuses, but true.

Would anyone around here complain about having an avowed environmentalist in the White House, btw? Not this citizen.

Edited on Mon Dec-04-06 12:13 AM by Jennicut
It was such a great documentary. It's not just about global warming. It's about why Al Gore feels so strongly about this issue and what compelled him to get back involved with it after the 2000 election. Plus, it has some great evidence about what's happening to the world because of rising co2 levels which leads to global warming. At the end of the movie there are a bunch of things listed as the credits go by that you can do to lower your output of co2.

132. My partner is Deaf. It never played with captions in my area.
We tend to choose movies that don't leave him sitting there bored and wondering what's going on. It's an important issue in this household.

If it's out on DVD, then I'll go rent it, but if there are no captions as is often the case with independent films, then I got a BIG issue with the producers.
