Stem cells 'could cure diabetes'
Edited on Tue Dec-05-06 07:53 AM by cal04
STEM cell science may yield a cure for diabetes, which currently afflicts nearly 250 million people, an expert told a conference in Cape Town.

“We are making huge progress,” diabetologist and stem cell researcher Wendy Macfarlane of Britain's Brighton University told delegates attending the giant international diabetes conference.

“Advances made in the past two to three years have been astonishing. The prospects are very exciting.”

Research is under way to try to convert embryonic and adult stem cells into insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells.

1. Isn't it funny (strange, not ha-ha) that Repukes put down stem cell research
because it can't help anybody now - "maybe" in 10-15 years ... and yet they support drilling in ANWR ... and the oil won't start benefitting the US for, oh, 10-15 years ...

3. Repukes rather like the idea of cures by
adult stem cells. Or using stem cells derived from cord blood.

It's the embryonic--and, for many, fetal--stem cells that they object to.

Of course, that's not including the many Repukes that aren't clear on the different possible sources for stem cells--people that confuse them with all the media attention the different kinds have gotten are just too stupid for words, merging them all into one class like that and thinking they're all and only embryonic.

2. Thank you Dobson!
Note that this research is going on in England. Yet the California Stem Cell initiative passed several years ago is still stalled in the courts thanks to ignorant biblethumpers.

4. Diabetes is a billion dollar cash cow for pharmaceutical companies
That is the real reason why stem cell research has been delayed, stone-walled, prevented, etc. etc. by BushCo. & Republicans, Inc.

It's the bottom line, instead of the straw man religious excuses, and it's all about the money big business will lose.

5. Ding Ding Ding...we have a winner
Same as cancer.
There will always be treatments available, however, the cure will always be just beyond our grasp.
