Bush Considering Doing Away With Lead Air Pollution Limits
The Bush administration is considering doing away with health standards that cut lead from gasoline, widely regarded as one of the nation's biggest clean-air accomplishments.

Battery makers, lead smelters, refiners all have lobbied the administration to do away with the Clean Air Act limits.

A preliminary staff review released by the Environmental Protection Agency this week acknowledged the possibility of dropping the health standards for lead air pollution. The agency says revoking those standards might be justified "given the significantly changed circumstances since lead was listed in 1976" as an air pollutant.

The EPA says concentrations of lead in the air have dropped more than 90 percent in the past 2 1/2 decades. But Rep. Henry Waxman (news, bio, voting record), D-Calif., the incoming chairman of the House Committee on Government Reform, called on the agency to "renounce this dangerous proposal immediately," because lead, a highly toxic element, can cause severe nerve damage, especially in children.

Soon after lead was listed as an air pollutant 30 years ago, the Carter administration began removing lead from gasoline. Other big sources of lead in the atmosphere are from solid waste, coal, oil, iron and steel production, lead smelters and tobacco smoke.

Or would that be merely an "unintended consequence"?

5. Didn't they do this after Katrina "temporarily"
after the mock gasoline shortage? Made people feel what it was like to do without gasoline and then suspended the laws because of a national emergency?
It's all about the profit for the oil companies.
BUSH HAS GOT TO GO.

I bet he DOES think that LEAD is good for you, especially with a little arsenic sprinkled on the top, since he thinks that's okay for KIDS in the water..

Most sickening display of Corporate Favoritism YET I think.. to actually POISON the PUBLIC for MONEY is beyond belief..

Can't even wrap my head around this, esp after watching "An Inconvenience Truth" just last night! :)

17. Lead in the air down 90%. Let's get it back up.
The Mad Hatter-in-Chief must be chewing on the lead crystal glasses when the Jack Daniels runs out. Or using a lead snorting straw, or something.

19. Sorry, but that's just too bizarre.
Why would * propose such a preposterous, previously unspoken goal just as the dems are getting ready to take the majority? Very strange.
