Poll question: Ahmadinejad: Humble Freedom Fighter or Evil Turd?
Not so many moons ago, there was a large contingent of DUers that went to bat for Mr. Ahmadinejad. Now that he's holding a "the Holocaust never happened" world conference, complete with David Duke, has the consensus changed?

6. Hey! It May Be Stupid, But It's Legit
I'm really curious as to where DU's sentiments lie these days - the support for Ahmadinejad a few months ago was pretty depressing for me!

...he's pretty fucking bad. I'm one who tries to give a certain leeway to third world leaders under threat of imperialist attack, but he is simply a reactionary, period.

18. Yeah, that's my point.
Apparently very few people noticed that Ahmadinejad's hosting a conference on holocaust denial and invited an American as a keynote speaker.

I think Ahmadinejad's laughing all the way to the reactor.

29. And he's been elected in our country
In a state legislature, and almost won a race for US Congress. So Duke is just as welcome in the US as he is apparently in Iran. Also, while I have my share of problems with Iran's leadership, let's not forget that, as far as racism goes, Israel is the only country that denies citizenship based on race.

32. Why am I wrong?
Israel grants automatic citizenship to Jews, everyone else has to go through a process. From wikipedia: "Israel is, by its own definition, the state of the Jewish nation, and its leadership believes that one of its primary objectives is keeping a Jewish majority in Israel. Thus, Israeli nationality law is created with a bias in favor of those with Jewish heritage.". Israel operates unde jus soli- or right of blood, not right of birthplace. Wikipedia again: "A non-Israel Jew or an eligible descendant of a non-Israel Jew needs to request approval to immigrate to Israel, a request which can be denied for a variety of reasons."

There are other ways to acquire citizenship for non-Jews, such as naturalization, by birth, by residence, or, except for Palestinians, by marrying and Israeli citizen. But these are rare.

38. Google the Nationality and Entry into Israel Law...
...aka the Citizenship and Family Unification Law.

It denies Israeli citizenship to spouses of Israeli citizens based on race.

Whether Israel is the only country to do this is another matter.

Also, it is a temporary law.

11. He's playing to his conservative base by saying he will wipe out Israel
Ahmedinejad is a lot of things, but I don't think he's suicidal, unless he wants what the CIA estimates to be roughly 400 Israeli nuke warheads wiping out Iran's 400 largest cities.

Bush does something similar with the conservative fundamentalist base here in the US but not to that extreme.

30. My theory on this
My sense is that Ahjamaned (sp?) is being used by the mullahs/Khameni in Iran to establish Iran as a regional power in the Middle East; his extremist outbursts are meant to win the loyalties of the Arab people. However, word is that the Iran parliament has called for early elections, and I think this is all staged to replace Ahjamened with a more moderate leader like Khatami before him; which will lessen pressure on their nuclear program.

28. Wow.
I wonder if you're that understanding of Bush. Jeez. Thank God our Dem leaders don't talk or think like that (no offense). Otherwise, forget '08 AND '12. I guess that's why we're "underground."

Seriously, let's not let our hatred for Republicans make us foolish. There ARE worse people than Bush, and this Holocaust denying bastard is one of them. Showing more understanding and support to the President of Iran than to our fellow Americans- however incompetent they may be -makes us go from Democrats to pure idiots.

I can just picture Ann Frank and the other 6 million Jews, homosexuals, etc. who were executed in the Holocaust waiting in the afterlife to kick the shit out of Mahmoud. I bet all the gays and non-Muslims he's had beaten and killed will be eager to get a shot at him too. Too bad he's probably going to hell.

He was put up by the Supreme Leader/Guardian Council (I think) as a candidate, and he was elected by the people. That is how it works there, the people elect the President, the Majlis (legislature), and the Assembly of Experts (those who appoint the Supreme Leader)...and so on, and so forth...
