To honor the military and raise money, teachers grow beards
LITCHFIELD, N.H. (AP) — The male teachers of Campbell High School agreed: they'd do a calendar to raise money, but they weren't going to take it all off.
Instead, they would grow beards.
About 15 teachers agreed to grow the beards, do the calendar and donate the proceeds to Tom Simard, 21, a Campbell alum and Marine sergeant whose leg was wounded by a roadside bomb in Iraq. Still unable to move his right foot or calf, he's undergoing physical therapy.
This week, the teachers are posing for individual shots and portraits in costume. The project, nicknamed "Follicle Follies," will go on sale next year.
Campbell has four graduates, all Marines, who served in Iraq, but Simard was the only one seriously wounded, social studies teacher David Harrigan said.
Simard said he can be sent anywhere in the country for his follow-up medical care. He needs skin and nerve grafts, but also hopes the military will approve a rare surgery to repair his shattered sciatic nerve, the main nerve running down the leg.
