Louisiana gets much less than MS for Katrina housing.....wonder why?
WASHINGTON — The federal government will give Louisiana $75.4 million for more-permanent disaster housing such as “Katrina cottages” — but is awarding neighboring Mississippi almost four times as much even though it suffered less destruction.

Several members of Louisiana’s congressional delegation expressed outrage Thursday night after learning about the awards, which will be announced today by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Mississippi suffered 32 percent of the hurricane-related housing damage last year, according to Red Cross estimates cited by Louisiana’s delegation. Louisiana accounted for 64.4 percent of the housing destroyed by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, those estimates show.

“FEMA has clearly learned very little from its mistakes, let alone basic math or a sense of fundamental fairness,” U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La. said in a written statement.

Landrieu pushed for the funding in the most recent supplemental spending bill.

“Louisiana gets the short end of the stick for alternative housing programs by almost 4-to-1, despite suffering more than three times the housing loss,” she said.

2. This should be a damned crime!
I hope the democrats reverse those numbers. But even if they do, that will be far too late. It's already far too late.

3. two words...trent lott
the sad thing is that lott had a total loss of his own home and is suing state farm because they won't pay

fact remains he is a powerful senator w. lots of pull

it is a tragedy for louisiana that our powerful senator, john breaux, had already retired from public life before the storm, he too was v. well-liked and i don't doubt for an instant that his bi-partisan pull would have brought in more $$$

landrieux is trying, but she just doesn't have the same seniority, the storm came at just the wrong time

vitter of course is a total loss

4. Mary has clearly learned very little
Beause she still won't say it's Republican politics at work here, the same Republican political bullshit that destroyed FEMA in the first place.

5. What do these statistics mean???
The article states: "Mississippi suffered 32 percent of the hurricane-related housing damage last year, according to Red Cross estimates cited by Louisiana’s delegation. Louisiana accounted for 64.4 percent of the housing destroyed by hurricanes Katrina and Rita, those estimates show."

32 percent of what? Number of people displaced? Number of structures damages? Dollars worth of damage to structures? Dollars worth of damage to house people?

It does matter and it should be made clear.

8. People's homes
The destruction was just as bad here in MS, but many more people lived in southeast LA at the time than in south MS, therefore more homes were destroyed over there.
