Jimmy Stewart is probably rolling in his grave |

I'm not going to name the particular jewelry retailer (they're found in many of your shopping malls), but they have a particular commercial that uses a scene from It's a Wonderful Life. It's the scene where George Bailey offers to lasso the moon for his wife, then the commercial cuts to some guy giving his lover some piece of jewelry.
I dunno, it just really ticks me off seeing a movie that is completely against material wealth being used in such a manner.

It ticks me off to see a man who was completely against material wealth have a holiday that's supposed to honor him turn out to be so commercialized.

I've always detested these jewelry store ads - they make it seem like if you really love someone, you'll buy him/her some expensive jewelry. They seem to be the worst offenders, and this particular commerical is the worst example of blatant commercialization I've ever seen.
But yeah, I'm not big on the whole commercializiation of Christmas.

10. Whenever those ads come on, I remind my husband, |
|
"I HATE diamonds, and if you were ever foolish enough to buy me jewelry, I'd think you'd gone senile!"

2. Kind of like when Levis(?), I think, used "Fortunate Son" in a commercial. |
|
Used the first verse, about folks being born to wave the flag, that red, white and blue, combined with jingoistic patriotic images...it was about as out of context use of a song in an ad I'd ever seen.

5. How about when Mercedez used Janis Joplin to sell their cars? |
|
I don't think you can get much more blatant than that.

8. A Cruise Ship Commercial Using "Lust For Life" Was The Most Bizarre IMO. |
|
And then there was the insult of hearing a Mark E Smith song for some recen† car commercial.

I made a note so I wouldn't buy their jeans. I always sang the rest of the song whenever it would come on, driving my poor husband nuts.

3. Director Frank Capra is probably rolling in his grave since he was |
|
a populist New Dealer.
Jimmy Stewart probably wouldn't be so upset. He was a right-wing Republican.

6. Anybody else vomiting at these Christmas car commercials? |
|
The ones where it seems like giving a Lexus for Christmas is something we all should be doing? Like we all can afford that. :sarcasm: Can't wait for a few more years to roll around and the realty companies start getting in on the Christmas action. "Give your daughter a gift of a home this Christmas!"

12. First is was the solitaire diamond |
|
then it was the past/present/future diamonds (three of them of course) now it's the "journey" diamonds (7-8 of them)
Next? Choke-chain diamonds? You belong to me handcuff diamonds? How many diamonds does it take to say I Love You?
I'm not against diamonds, I even own some. But I won't buy into the "more is better" philosophy of the diamond retailers.
