I didn't write anything before because I just couldn't think of anything to say, and I thought maybe some words would come to me. They haven't. There just aren't any words possible for such a horrific, shocking, infinite loss.

Another DU'er wrote here that his daughters knew the boy and said he was a nice, kind person. I hope Dianna and her family will see those words and know that her precious child will be remembered for years and years... that her son won't be forgotten, that we are all lesser for his loss, and that Derrick will be carried in people's hearts until they themselves die.

Hearing about something like this... what a sad, heartbreaking reminder that we are all connected, and that any differences between us pale in comparison to the fact that we are all grieving for this boy.

I refused to send my 11-year-old on an overnight school trip that involved a hike down a winding highway and rain-swollen creek to the beach. A school administrator and I really got into it about the wisdom of sending 6th graders with high school chaperones on such a trek, but I knew no one was going to watch my child the way I would, and that ultimately I was responsible for my child's safety. If she missed out on a "valuable learning experience" so be it.

That's what that poor family will have to live with every day. Mom signed the permission slip and entrusted her son's safety to school personnel who were obviously not as diligent as they could have been.
