Here's a glimpse of the GOP Primary season. Yeah...he'll be nominated. Riiight.

Obviously DU doesn't have a problem with men dressing in drag, but it's a safe bet that the fundie base does.

22. And, no offense, your point is horseshit.
I'm so fucking sick and tired of the homophobic crap that is going on in this country.

Rudy dresses in drag for fundraiser = OMG, he must be GAY!!! Or a latent homo. What a total fuckup. He's totally fucked up his career. blah, blah, blah.

He dressed up in drag for a fundraiser. If *I* dressed up like Tiki Barber, is that fodder?

God, this shit gets so fucking old.

39. No, my fault.
I found out pretty late in my life that the lack of civil rights, (something I take completely for granted in my heterosexual, married, mom of three, middle class world) was deeply and profoundly resented and I think I've made it my cause celebre to attack and defend my GBLT bros and sis's.

I truly didn't mean to attack you and again, I'm sorry if I offended you. Not my intention at all.

I just don't think this shit is funny. We wouldn't be laughing if Rudy had dressed up in blackface, right?

First of all...we ALL know that Rudolph Guiliani has the proverbial snowball's chance in hell of winning the Republican nomination. He's pro-choice and pro-gay rights. No way will Pat Robertson and company allow him anywhere near that ticket in 2008. So why dredge this up? Why post this picture...which I've seen here before?

Rudolph Guiliani is a Republican, of course. There are many other reasons to express disapproval of Guiliani and his record. But to engage in this stuff...it's so...shameful. We here at DU should be better than that. And this isn't directed to any one particular person.

Just my .02

For me, anytime I see someone claiming to be of the persuasion that is being discriminated against and also claiming not to care because it's 'piffle', their argument flies right out the window. Don't you 'care' about your GLBT friends/relatives who are offended by this homophobia?

Good for you that you've been with your SO as long as you have. Can't you see how many GLBT DUers find this photo to be homophobic and offensive?

72. LOL. I know. But after getting a truer sense of what homosexuals
go through in this country, (IRL as well as posting here), I am doubly committed to equal rights. Equal rights are civil rights. We, as a people in this country, shouldn't 'feel' comfortable telling homophobic jokes, in much the same way as most don't feel comfortable telling racist jokes.

I can't begin to describe to you the depth of the sorrow I felt this year when I *finally* I admit, belatedly, realized how devastating our country treats people in love. I have never been homophobic, ever, but the depth of my sorrow is something I won't soon forget.

I need to see that changed. In my lifetime. In my children's lifetime. I don't want a grandchild of mine telling their parent that they have a friend whose parents kicked them out because of their sexual orientiation like my daughter told me. I don't want to have to explain that level of hatred to another child.

79. I appreciate that, but I think you are overestimating the 'angst' we feel about
many of the things that you're concerned about. Most of us aren't fragile thin-skinned prancing fairies; on the contrary we're outwardly pretty much like everybody else. And yes, the issues on equality are very important but we don't obsess over minutia like Rudy wearing a dress. By the way,
my mention of Senator Coburn wasn't made in a vacuum - I was his daddy's chief pilot for years and hauled Tommy around the country from the time he was in high school. I consider him to be a friend in some ways and an enemy in others...he well understands that (or so he's said to me) and he full well
remembers the many times I held his life and those of his family in my capable hands. I 'converted' his brother, still working on him. This is all true, there are many DUers who know my history. I may be queer but I'm not a liar.

81. Never said you were a liar.
And with all due respect, your experience isn't everyone's. Anymore than my essentially (honestly) painless C-section is what everyone who has one experiences.

Some of my friends have been subjected to intense homophobia and it really disturbs me. Probably more than most, but I am a passionate person and I feel others' pain very, very deeply. (Which is why I am doing the Second Harvest donation challenge, but that's another story for another day)

I remember when I was young my parents coming home from a party and my mom was absolutely incensed because most of the attendees had daughters, (like me) and they were stating that they didn't feel it necessary to send their daughters to college, that a 'secretarial school' (called that back in the day) was good enough. My mom, and in fairness, my dad were outraged that a child shouldn't get the same opportunity based on gender.

I kind of feel the same way about gay rights. I'm outraged that who a person loves determines their lot in life and their rights. And, that isn't right.

We don't 'circulate' in any gay community, we live in a fairly remote area and get along VERY well with most (99.9+%) of everybody out here. Our activism is not local because it wouldn't be useful on that level so we concentrate on state and federal venues.

76. Before I go to bed...can I offer a thought?
I'm gay...and I've thought that there's been not exactly subtle homophobia here at DU for a while.

From being told that, because we demand the same rights as heterosexual Americans (legally recognized same-sex marriages, for instance), we gay and lesbian Democrats cost us the White House in 2004, to more stuff about Jeff Gannon than I ever, ever really wanted to read about, to some of the vile stuff I read about Mark Foley...

I have seen this unforunate habit of some (emphasis on SOME) people around here using homosexuality or anything that smacks of homosexuality as a cudgel ot a way to slur Republicans. Yes, there are gay Republicans and there's a hypocrisy factor. But...it's also homophobic. In other words...there are some that are a little too...gleeful, perhaps?....in playing the gay card. In other words, for some of these people who seem to be "interested" in homosexuality, I sure as fuck don't see them in the GLBT forum.

because he doesn't care that it's insensitive to gays to do so. He's a straight, white, republican male. When have they ever cared if they offended minority groups?

For the most part (of course there are exceptions), straight, white republican males strive to be divisive not inclusive, as such it's not a big surprise that he would do something like this.

:) But a straight, white (possibly republican), male that likes to dress in drag would probably be thought of as a cross dresser. As a cross dresser, it is doubtful that one would pose for such a picture as this. A great many cross dressers carry a great deal of shame about enjoying wearing women's clothing.

and I know quite a few. I have to agree that I don't quite see the connection between Giuliani in drag & homophobia. Or the comparison to black-face. I *do* see the connection to homophobia in *comments* about how it ruins his career or is somehow deserving of ridicule. Could you perhaps explain why you think it's homophobic instead of just doing the eyes thing?

He actually looks like he's enjoying himself - and good for him. Like someone else said - it's the one thing I could like him for.

Women can wear pants without being labeled as mannish. Men don't enjoy the same freedom.

Of course if the RW religious fanatics have their way women will be confined to dresses. Knee length or longer please.

I'd have gone with a little darker wig, and lavender really isn't his color. But he has good facial structure -- very nice cheekbones. I think he'd look good in a simple black or red dress, maybe with pearls.

85. not for nothing, but...
there is a really, really narsty part of me that wants to see a twice divorced, philandering, pro-choice, pro-gay rights catholic republican like Rudy, and an empty suit, flip-flopping political carpetbagger entrepreneurial capitalist who specialised in buying, downsizing companies and then selling them for mucho dolares Mormon like Mitt Romney sitting together on a stage in Biloxi Mississippi debating things like family values, working for the small businessperson, and how the south should just ignore all their previous comments about choice and gay rights.

i do believe i'd pay to see that debate; damn, i'd register as a republican for a day to get a ticket.

i don't think either of them gets out of the south with 20% of the vote between them. Brownback carries the load here, and if McCain can scrape up enough support in the west to capture the nomination (which I wouldn't take money on) then he'll have a lot of fun picking a VP nominee-

hmm... Condi? nope, by the time the dems are done investigating, she'll be lucky to get a job teaching history in a junior high school. Brownback? that would solidify the fundies, and lose the center, which McCain has ignored anyway up to now. Hutchinson (Kay)? hmmm. two candidates from the same region. Rudi or Mitt? nope, he would have that fundemental problem again. Jebbie?
nope, bush fatigue.

think about it, folks. The pugs have a problem. The inevitability of McCain, versus seriously looking at Hegel or Huckabee, who could actually win.

BTW, I like the dress. But I really don't think The Donald's tie goes very well with it.

I guess I just don't want to get over into homophobic-dragophobic dialogue. I'd rather consider what is happening here on earth.

I'm not sure Huckabee would win, but I defnitely agree that the repubs have a problem. I've thought that since the morning after the '04 election, when it seemed clear that there would be a war between the religious-nutjob faction and the sorta-libertarian faction ... the longer they put off that difficult decision, the better :)

114. I think Rudy looks great in drag.
But, sadly, I agree with the OP. The Fundie base will not support him after they see these pics (however stupid that is) and after they find out that he lived with 2 gay guys in NYC. Not to mention the fact that while he lived with them, he was dating a woman while still married to his wife.

Rudy will never get the Repug nomination, but if some 3rd party were to spring up, he'd have a helluva shot.

I just think it's amusing because pre-9/11 when I was in NYC, I would see all kinds of Rudy protestors. He really wasn't like all that much in NYC. But, I will give him credit for cleaning up the city.
